Hillary's Speeches - Need a Speaker?

Let's say you're a big organization or corporation and you're having some kind of event where you want to attract a lot of attendees who will pay a premium for your rubber chicken or overcooked prime rib banquet. How do you do that? Well, having a prominent speaker on the agenda is a time-tested method. So, how do you find such a person?

You go to a speaker's bureau, where prominent people who do public speaking are represented by that bureau. You click on a topic or the subject matter you want addressed, and then you see a list of available speakers. At the top of that list for many topics are people like former Presidents, former Secretaries of State, Governors, captains of industry, and similar folks. They're big draws, if you can afford their high fees for speaking.

But, how important is your event to you? Really important? How much business or how many donations to your organization do you expect your event to generate? Lots and lots? If so, then pick from the top of the list of available speakers. They're proven draws. They attract attendees and help to generate handsome donations. If they'll stick around for a reception and shake some hands, all the better. You can charge extra for that perk.

That's how it's done. Do you care what they'll say? Probably not. What do you expect from them? You expect them to draw people to your event. That's the idea. What they say doesn't matter as much as how prominent and attractive they are to your audience.

Do you expect your speaker to help you out sometime in the future? Silly people. They're getting paid for attracting people to your event. They don't give a crap about you, generally. Once they're done, they'll fly back to where they live and deposit your check. That's what they do. They speak for a fee.

Do they expect Hillary to help them out sometime in the future? Hell yes, by inaction.

They like things exactly the way that they are.

in the intense conviction of your delivery, by any chance? Seriously, the Clintons are doing big work with their foundation, but money is power and lack of it is a problem. A famous face and name won't purchase even one plane ticket to meet with activists.

You are correct. A person planning an event will book the best person their budget allows. You have to fill the seats. And generally, if it's a luncheon address, most listeners are very sleepy from a too rich and big lunch. And if it's an after dinner speech, most listeners are tipsy from the cocktail hour, wine with dinner and after dinner drinks. No one will be influenced.

interesting because of who I wrote for. I didn't get paid all that much, but I spoke at various functions for various groups. Most of the gigs were at conferences and trade shows for the industry I wrote about, along with a couple of corporate gigs related to the same industry.

It was fun to do, but influenced few, I imagine. I was the entertainment for the event. A funny story related to the industry, followed by some information and opinion about the state of the industry and where things were heading. Piece of cake. The food wasn't that great, but you get to stay in a nice hotel and visit some place you probably wouldn't go otherwise.

I sort of miss that stage of my life. Now, I'm boring and uninteresting enough not to get such speaking gigs.

receiving funds from a large financial institution (even one fined millions of dollars improper behavior) and
that it doesn't matter at all what such politicians said to that institution. I feel better about the world now.
BTW, do you happen to know what the longest river in the world is?

That said, some of the media parties at Comdex, back in the 90s, had great food. Some, though, didn't, to their eventual detriment.

If Big Banks gave you $3 million for a dozen speeches, wouldn't you have a more positive attitude towards Big Banks?

I know it would give me a more positive attitude towards Big Banks.
