Bernie Sanders Has A Few Words For ‘Bernie Bros'
Bernie Bros are a group of Bernie Sanders supporters who, rather than align themselves with the Sanders’ campaign promises of not attacking fellow candidates personally, instead engage in personal and sexist attacks against Sanders’ Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. And Bernie Sanders is not impressed.
When Senator Sanders (I-Vt.) was asked about the phenomenon of a certain faction of his supporters making unfortunate, sexist remarks about Hillary Clinton, as well as to Clinton’s supporters, on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, Sanders was swift in his renouncement of them. In fact, he roundly renounced the Bernie Bros is what has become his trademark blunt style.
“I have heard about it. It’s disgusting. Look, we don’t want that crap. We will do everything we can and I think we have tried. Look, anybody who is supporting me that is doing the sexist things is — we don’t want them. I don’t want them. That is not what this campaign is about.”
In the beginning, it wasn’t what the Bernie Bros were supposed to be about, either. The term first showed up in the media in October of 2015, in an article found in the Atlantic that was actually meant to poke some fun at a “certain type” of Bernie Sanders supporter that the article dismissed as being young, male, and “oh, so very earnest.” The description of the so-called Bernie Bro used in that article is less than flattering.
