2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI will confirm that Clinton pledges not to cut
Social Security. I belong to Social Security Works and SSW is claiming victory Feb. 5th after pressuring candidates to commit.

(10,345 posts)when she was asked if she would expand SS, she carefully answered with... "I will... ENHANCE social security..."
why not just say yes?
but oh well she's changed her position again with wording... I guess

(4,552 posts)who exactly will see a benefit.
It won't be across the board.
She is very good at proposals to only help certain people for certain benefits and programs.
If you fall outside some defined guideline, you lose.
And unless all that is defined before a vote, you might be voting for someone who has no intention of helping you, based on certain demographic, or income, or other entitlement test.
$15 minimum wage for some.
Enhance social security (I think she means for women who didn't work and those who are widowed)
Free tuition for some students
see, it's a slice and dice.
If you miss the cut-offs you are screwed.
You decides the cut-off criteria?
Sorry, not buying.

(2,975 posts)I don't trust her, I'm glad to hear they feel positive, but I want to hear it from the candidates.

PoliticAverse
(26,366 posts)Do you consider the Greenspan Proposals that were adopted a "cut" to Social Security?
PoliticAverse
(26,366 posts)but many people seem to not consider that as a 'cut'.
In 2008 Clinton suggested the creation of bi-partisan commission to determine
changes to Social Security and Obama pointed out that resulted in a raising of the
retirement age.
OBAMA: That commission raised the retirement age, and also raised the payroll tax. So Sen. Clinton cant have it both ways.

(74 posts)is a huge red flag. like she's "evolving" on this issue. why can't she just be a good democrat? because she and her people are burrowed so deeply in the keester of big business that she has to pre-clear and placate donors before adopting progressive stances

(1,976 posts)There's no guarantee that she would stick to her word, but getting her on the record would be a plus. In any case, we must continuously apply pressure. Otherwise, the corporate wing will likely reverse course. Obama putting cuts on the table shows what they're capable of.

(3,687 posts)"Demand" ... i.e. beg in harsh tones? And what about the rest of the country that pays 5 times what the rest of the world pays? How about forcing the greedy bastards into submission?
Expand Social Security benefits for widows and those who took time out of the paid workforce to care for a child or sick family member.
expanding for widows and sick leave is fine but WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF US?
It depends on what your definition of the word IS, is.
