Related: About this forumPsssst. Bernie volunteered at a "socialist kibbutz". It's over folks. A SOCIALIST kibbutz!

(1,571 posts)I remember having to rise early, do chores, and eat at a communal table. There was child labor and punishment. I was often corrected and told what to wear and how to act. Sometimes, I was not allowed to go outside at all.
Oh wait....that was my family.
I remember now...we all lived on farms and we had to contribute resources or time to build/staff the central meeting place where everyone was expected to volunteer at the shop and participate in the governance meetings. All kinds of left wing commie propaganda was allowed to fester in the common room...contra dances, yoga classes, LGBQT support groups, fund raisers for the Waldorf School, even anti war / pro treehugging event organising.
It was hell. Wait, no, actually it was pretty cool. That was the local co-op. They have supported organic produce for over 40 years now. Still going strong, I hear. Dirty hippies.
Give me a minute, I will remember some horrible community-building nightmare.

(12,471 posts)There is no such thing as a capitalist Kibbutz. A lot of my Jewish friends spent time on a kibbutz. They learned how to get along with people, and came out of it better.

(18,775 posts)When, you ask? Perhaps at some point in 1929 Romania when the kibbutz was founded? You know, just 12 years after the people of Russia overthrew their repressive monarchy? Or perhaps it was in the 1960s when Bernie volunteered there!!1!!
Since any dates are conveniently left off for this whole 'Soviet model' thing, you can (conveniently) come to your own conclusions!

clearly, living a live of obscene privilege and practicing predatory capitalism to feed off the middle and struggling is soooooo much more reflective of good 'murican values......

(11,619 posts)Israels first kibbutz was Degania, founded in 1909 by a group of young Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. They dreamed of working the land and creating a new kind of community, and a new kind of Jewstronger, more giving, and more rooted in the land.
The community they founded, and the hundreds more kibbutzim that popped up across the country, aimed to realize the Marxist principle, from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. In the early years, kibbutz members worked mostly in agriculture. Instead of earning individual incomes for their labor, all money and assets on the kibbutz were managed collectively. In keeping with the ideal of total economic equality, kibbutz members ate together in a communal dining hall, wore the same kibbutz clothing (and had them washed at the kibbutz laundry), and shared responsibility for child-rearing, education, cultural programs, and other social services.
By 1950, two years after the establishment of the state, 67,000 Israelis lived on kibbutzim, making up 7.5% of the countrys population. At this time, kibbutzim played a key role not only in Israels agricultural development, but also in its defense and political leadership. Early kibbutzim were often placed strategically along the countrys borders and outlying areas in order to help in the defense of the country. Many of the countrys top politicians and leaders in military and industry, particularly in the 1950s and 60s, came from the kibbutz movement.
Just for information.

As tearing Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars.
And he voted for George McGovern for President."
"Well, he's a friend of them long haired, hippy-type, pinko fags!
I betchya he's even got a commie flag
tacked up on the wall inside of his garage."
"He's a snake in the grass, I tell ya guys.
He may look dumb but that's just a disguise,
He's a mastermind in the ways of espionage"
They all started lookin real suspicious at him
And he jumped up and said "Now just wait a minute Jim!
You know he's lying I been living here all of my life!"
"I'm a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church.
And I ain't even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"
I'm thinkin' the anti-Sematism and Red Baiting will continue until Bernie sings this old Charlie Daniels' song at one of his rallies.
