Marcy Kaptur makes her case for Bernie Sanders

The longest-serving woman in the US House, Kaptur, a Democrat officially neutral in the race, called Sanders “the only voice we’ve had the last three decades, of all these presidential candidates, who is actually talking about the economic issues that are actually affecting American families.”

Kaptur, a longtime ally of organized labor and outspoken opponent of President Clinton’s free-trade policies, stopped just shy of endorsing Sanders, but praised him for his ideological consistency.

“He hasn’t changed anything, and people are hearing the message now. Unvarnished, now, for the first time in my career,” she told the Globe in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon. “First time in my career that I’ve heard a candidate give voice to what we’ve been struggling for and against in this Congress for the last quarter century.”

She contrasted that with Clinton, saying, “I must say that when Secretary Clinton was secretary of state, I don’t recall her ever attempting to balance [free-trade agreements] or change them in any way.”

She made a stand against abortion when the Dems
were trying to impeach Bush. She
used abortion as her excuse ... I'd have to look up
the details. Her district is a gerry-mandered freak
built to oust Kucinich. In my opinion she is a DINO.

Marcy is on her own level--as a fellow Catholic, I find her struggles to articulate a position on abortion very meaningful. She's brilliant. But they've also affected her career (she's otherwise relatively left, not a DINO, imho). Barbara Lee would be an AMAZING pick for Bernie's VP. Love to see that happen.

She represents the great city of Toledo very well. (Toledo is our beloved cousin to the south. Great town.)

Kaptur was one of those who voted yes for the legislation that allowed the pension cuts. It was a bipartisan bill and a lot of her colleagues voted against it.

I heard her explain it on America's Workforce Radio as some combination of not getting the full import of the provision in the Omnibus bill and then labor being split (at least that's what I took away). She's an appropriator--seems to have made a philosophical commitment to vote that way. Anyway she and Sanders are fighting it now.

It's just refreshing to vote for a candidate who speaks for my values rather than simply vote so the Repub Nutters don't take over the henhouse in the Supreme Court.
