2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI trust that both Hillary and Bernie would both enact public health care
if they had a Democratic supermajority in the Senate and Congress when President. But since gerrymandering will keep the Congress in Republican hands in the near and mid future, I'm for the candidate who has other fronts in the fight on inequality and citizens united cronyism.

(421 posts)In my opinion, the best way to get medicare for all is to build a grassroots movement that demands it. Right now, Sanders is building the movement that is demanding it. The political will has to be there. We didn't even have it when Democrats controlled everything. Next time around when we have the power, there needs to be a different outcome. The movement Sanders is building will extend beyond his presidency, and in my view vastly increase the odds for real change. The kind of change private insurance companies don't want.
As for other fronts, Sanders has been outspoken and an advocate of many progressive causes. I have no doubt he would be a fighter on many fronts, and I have no doubt Clinton would be a fighter on many fronts. But I think a Sanders presidency would start from a much stronger position politically. It would be a shock to the system that the system could not ignore. Something would have to give. Not as quickly as we would like, but the wheel would begin turning with the energy and momentum of the movement.
And then there is foreign policy. Philosophically, I am more aligned with Sanders than Clinton in that arena. Everything I hear him say about our role in the world, how best to destroy ISIS, etc., I agree with. Clinton sees the U.S. still too much as the world's policeman, and is too quick to get involved in areas where we have no business. Bad for us, bad for them. The history is there for all to see. Sanders, in my view, has demonstrated superior judgement in world affairs, despite Clinton having traveled to the world.
They are both far better than the alternative. But one of them is way, way better.
