Senate control factors into environmental group’s backing of Elizabeth Warren

Sunday, September 30, 2012

While Brown this month declined to rule out supporting a gas tax increase as part of a larger package, saying “it depends where it goes,” his campaign responded to Warren’s endorsement news by pointing out in an email that ELM supports a higher state gas tax to pay for transportation improvements.

Brown’s campaign also pointed to Bachrach’s roots and ties to the Democratic Party.

Bachrach this year wrote a Boston Globe opinion piece saying Gov. Deval Patrick should reintroduce his proposal to raise the gas tax to fund mass transit and repair roads and bridges. The organization also supports “congestion pricing” – the practice of charging more for tolls during peak travel times. The proposal would drive up prices for consumers, Alleigh Marre, a Brown spokeswoman said in an email.

Mark Rodgers, a spokesman for Cape Wind, joined ELM Action Fund officials outside the State House Thursday, saying he supports Warren because Massachusetts cannot build its economy through oil or coal, but has the chance to become a world leader on energy with the natural resources it does possess with wind and solar power. “I think Elizabeth Warren really understands that,” he said.
