2016 Postmortem

(279 posts)As a member of the "demographic" that dominates the Democratic Party in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and other areas of the country I'm offended that some supporters of HRC want to write us off as unimportant and inconsequential. In order to win HRC will need Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa...she will not win Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, South Carolina, and Georgia. If you look at your little chart you will see that 8 of the first 10 states are essential for a Democratic victory. Take us for granted at your peril.
DanTex
(20,709 posts)But the fact is that Bernie lost a state with demographics highly favorable to him, so it's a bit strange to see so many people spinning it as a win.
It would be like Hillary spinning a close loss in Georgia as a win.

(3,428 posts)Tie goes to the runner, in other words, it was a huge strategic win for Bernie.
Fact is, Bernie is going to crush Hillary in NH, then he will be the frontrunner. Momentum will be his for the rest of February and Hillary will have a mountain to climb, at that point.
No one is buying your meme that Bernie lost Iowa

(50,562 posts)If I had a nickel for every picture of an overflowing Bernie rally in Iowa...a "Hillary is in freefall!" post on Facebook...a breathless "Bernie is the savior of the Democratic Party!" post on DU...a glowing Bernie endorsement by some celebrity that about five people have heard of before (name one Killer Mike album without googling his discography)...or a Prominent Economist explaining how Bernie's plans are so wonderful everyone should stop what they're doing to vote for him...well, I'd need a pallet jack to move them all. According to Sanders' supporters, Bernie should have left Iowa with about 75 percent of the delegates because Everyone Just LOVES Bernie!
The final result: He lost by 8 delegates.
rusty fender
(3,428 posts)You talk about, this 8 delegate margin, will pale by comparison to his win over her in NH.
Will you be so smug after her 33% margin loss next week

(31,849 posts)a head to head Primary between HRC and Bernie ... where Bernie is expected to/supposed to win those FEW states with high white liberals, and be less competitive, elsewhere. Right?
DanTex
(20,709 posts)demographics of primary voters this time around.
And all polling (that I've seen) indicates that white liberals are Bernie's strongest demographic. So the idea is just what you said -- he is expected to be most competitive in states towards the top of the list. Iowa ranking so high, and Bernie losing, albeit by a tiny margin, is not a good sign unless he can seriously turn the numbers around.

(279 posts)actually Dan is diminishing the importance of states like Iowa and I correctly noted that 8 of the first 10 states on that list similarly lack "diversity" yet those 8 are essential to a Democratic victory. Dan is essentially suggesting that the deep south should select our candidate.

(4,377 posts)Despite his platform quite clearly offering the most benefits to minorities and working class whites, yet apparently Hillary with her corporation friendly approach supposedly has those voters firmly locked up.
The only thing standing between Bernie and the nomination is reaching enough of those voters and convincing them that he can achieve what he says he can. That's the fight right there, and it doesn't have a damn thing to do with white liberals.

(278 posts)What is missing in your chart it the fact that Young women voted for Bernie last evening......not Hillary.
And where in the chart does it state that Blacks will vote for White Hillary over White Bernie?

(11,257 posts)The fact that she took time away from campaigning in IA and NH to help shore up the AA vote in Pennsylvania shows that she gets it and is playing the long game in this primary.
All she had to do was to avoid losing both IA and NH (which would lead to the inevitable "she's doomed!" narrative). I would have loved to see her get a more resounding win, but that would have been a bonus, not a necessity.
People can spin it any way they'd like, but she's still in very good shape.
