2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThis race is between the Past and the Future.
Hillary Clinton represents the Past. She is how things have always been done, within the confines of an established system, abiding to a set of rules made by the powerful that dictate how things are to be done. In her corner she has the most support among old Baby Boomers who are accustomed to that system.
Bernie Sanders represents the Future. He is the possibility of how things can be done, casting off the established system, breaking the set of rules made by the powerful that dictate how things are to be done. In his corner he has the most support among young Millennials who see a different way forward.
Of course there are Democrats who don't quite fit into either group demographically, but this is the major theme I see playing out right now. We are in the midst of deciding if we want to stay in the Past, or move into the Future.
I for one am choosing the Future.

(14,733 posts)There are populations who don't feel either candidate represents them, and some have good reason to think so. But among those who at least see some possibility with one candidate vs the other, one group is still reaching for change, the other the status quo, fearing that if they don't stay 'safe', that they'll lose even more.
But we're still losing on that path. The gap between rich and poor continues to grow, the police and courts continue to work to protect the rich from the poor, to marginalize and victimize those without money. Money becomes ever more directly tied to power, and the rich continue to destroy the environment upon which we all depend.
It's continuing down the path to extinction, not only of human life, but of pretty much everything above insects.

(55,981 posts)But some want the perception of comfort of strong authoritarian leaders that promise to take good care. Our founders would be upset that we allowed the Aristocracy to steal our democracy. Those supporting Sanders want their democracy back. Those supporting Goldman-Sachs think the Wealthy make better rulers.
