2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAs an O'Malley supporter at caucus.. It was not a good night to be me
It was not a good night for us. But I have to say.. the O'Malley campagin staff locally was the best I have ever seen.. no we did not win..but they were wonderful young people that I hope to keep touch with as they go though the future..and I hope Gov. O'Malley will run again.. To all my fellow O'Malley supporters.. I think he will be back. He is just too big a talent politically not to try again.
I have no dog in the fight now..

because of Hillary supporters coming over simply to deny Bernie a delegate, I salute you. I wish those folks had had the guts to not take part in that sort of blatant gaming the rules, and had simply switched as many folks to Bernie as Hillary's people switched to him.
ETA: Looks like I touched a nerve:
Your ignorant slur on the Iowa Caucus Realignment Process is noted.
Couldn't be aboveboard enough to say it in public, had to go to on-site mail.

(199 posts)I agree that O'Malley could be a great candidate. It was just bad timing in my eyes. With Clinton's massive name recognition and Bernie's appeal to the youth and grassroots he never had a chance to get his campaign numbers up. I wouldn't mind seeing either candidate pick him as VP though. Consolation prize?

(11,619 posts)We will need every vote, especially considering the differences in turnout between Republicans and Democrats.
Republicans broke records, Democrats did not. That does not bode will if this continues to happen elsewhere.

(22,878 posts)They blew the doors off at their caucus.. I hear what you are saying

(17,216 posts)If the Democratic party cannot find sufficient inspiration to choose a candidate, then the general election promises to be much uglier than it should be.

(11,619 posts)It might that we will see a more enthusiastic electorate in other sates. This is something to watch.
In Iowa, the Enthusiasm was with the Republican Party, Democrats, not so much.

i hear ya, and grant you the emotions, with empathy. but please, look at the terrain and dig deep to determine what you feel is best for the country, and give your all to that cause, as if it were for o'malley!
we all need you and your commitment!
thx.

(59,504 posts)I really don't get why he gained so little traction. It may be something so simple as HRC taking all the oxygen of any "regular" alternative, no matter how liberal and accomplished -- and Bernie capturing almost all the not HRC people.
I agree that we likely have not seen the last of him -- he came across, not just as smart, principled, liberal and a genuinely good person.
You, Elleng and others were great advocates.

I would love to see him as VP...though since that seems to screw future chances of running for President, maybe not, because I'd like to see him run again. My choice was him or Bernie from the beginning.

He's too valuable an asset to waste. And he did some great things for my native state.

(1,464 posts)A mile. I am incredibly sad to see him suspend his campaign but am excited to hear what he does next. I drove down to see O'Malley speak at JJ dinner and Wing Ding and got to meet him at Wing Ding. So happy I did and I saw the O'Malley team in action. Hardest working team there. They reflected their candidate's optimism.
I will probably throw in with Sanders supporters because I think he is more electable of the two candidates and I blame Hillary for the rigged DNC schedule that hurt O'Malley. Plus, I still haven't forgiven her or Bill for her racist campaign against Obama in 2008. But, my heart will still belong to O'Malley and I will likely still vote for him in my caucus.

(60,019 posts)we can't let our politics be yet another of today's many popularity contests. There are too many hurting, far too much at stake.
And it is lazy to just allow politics to be yet another "reality" show. We see, with Trump, what happens.

(26,549 posts)I'm sorry O'Malley did not get the attention he deserved.
But it's never over.
First and most literal, O'Malley will be back in some capacity.
Second, there was a set of ideals and policies that drew you to O'Malley. For now, mourn what could have been and relax. When you feel up to it, the battle for those policies and ideals goes on.
Duval
(4,280 posts)brought a lot to the debates. He was my second choice, Peacetrain, and I hope to see more of him. You backed a winner, IMHO.

(26,117 posts)a priest, I guess, because he had on a collar and made a joke about O'Malley being Catholic during his speech.
Anyway, I told him MOM was my second choice, and I think it was unfortunate that his message was unable to break through the media circus surrounding HRC/SBS. We talked about how he's young, and could easily be the candidate in 8 years - after he's finished being VP
Anyway, I like MOM and hope he stays involved on the national scene in some capacity.

(5,402 posts)Was an eye opener for me. These sleazy tactics rob this process of any grace and reflect deeper character flaws in the candidates whose campaigns engage in the behavior.
He was definitely my only other choice this primary.

(1,054 posts)In any of several positions. It would also give him the national/international experience that would help in subsequent campaigns. He'd ROCK in Interior, to say nothing of ambassador to the UN

(47,534 posts)I wish there were more candidates.
I hope that you and all the O'Malleyans will be back in November to vote for the Democratic candidate - whoever s/he is.
There are too many things at stake, starting with the Supreme Court.

(33,544 posts)I personally wish that there were more candidates from which to choose.
It's sad to be down to two so early in the campaign, and I would certainly like to thank Mr. O'Malley and his supporters for his efforts to expand the field, if nothing else.
I can't say I paid attention to his campaign, not that it really matters for me personally, as I live in a State that is irrelevant for choosing the ultimate Presidential candidate.
Thanks to you personally for your efforts.

I'd really like to see him become the head of Health and Human Services, whether under Hillary or Bernie. It's an enormous bureaucracy that could sure use a good manager at the helm.

(3,373 posts)suppose, because it is in the business for selling a news product and I don't imagine I have the expertise to question how they make or market that product.
The DNC, however, had a duty to deal the cards fairly and it failed that task miserably. I'm no longer donating any money to parties or advocacy groups nationally and, instead, donating directly to candidates (about 75% local, 25% national). I actually feel much better now that I'm cutting out the middle-management from the process.
