The 'beautiful' family slain by father tormented by the prospect of Obama winning the election'

Albert Peterson shot dead his wife and two sons hours after going to church because he dreaded the thought of Obama winning the election, a family friend has revealed.
A confidante of the family for the past 25 years has spoken to MailOnline about the strength and grace of the Peterson family, as well as the torment that plagued Albert which drove him to shoot dead his wife Kathleen and his two sons Christopher and Mathew at their suburban home in DC on Sunday.
A history of mental illness, the loss of a dear uncle, and a growing fear of Obama winning a second term in the White House took its toll on the mind of Mr Peterson, a wealthy defense contractor, the friend said.

I don't need equal time, just two minutes every quarter hour during Rush and Hannity.

(13,468 posts)This is NOT a good mix. This man saw nothing but hopelessness in his alternative universe and his whole family is dead now because of it. So sad.
Why do we have to have screaming hate on virtually all AM stations all the time?

(4,451 posts)He murdered his family. Did he kill himself?

(19,458 posts)Yes, he may have been unstable, then then again it's hard to separate them from the "sane" people who listen to Glenn Beck, sometimes. I want to know WHAT happened in church that day that set him off. Guarantee that the pastor was politicizing things...

(115,836 posts)The Methodists tend to be fairly liberal and tolerant these days - they aren't raving nutjob evangelicals. I suspect this guy's problems were pretty much in his own head. Here's the church's web site: http://www.florisumc.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=183840 They don't look like hateful crazies at all.

(20,166 posts)here's the topic for Sept. 23:
"Rev. Barbara Miner speaks on Griping and Grumbling vs. gratitude. Most people have circumstances that might lead them to grumble about their lives or other people. James calls us to realize that we will be judged by God for the way we judge others. In order to persevere, we must be grateful for the way God redeems hardship, and the compassion and mercy we enjoy."
There's a video of it at the site (http://www.florisumc.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=184022)...I didn't watch it, but based on this sermon description, the descripton of other sermons, and my own experience in the UMC (I no longer attend one), I can't imagine the church played a role in contributing to this tragedy.
The main source, imo, is the man's mental illness, which he apparently had wrestled with for some time. Perhaps we could point to rightwing fearmongering contributing to it (ala Chuck Norris' "thousand years of darkness" tripe), but I'd be surprised to find hard rightwing theology in the UMC.
Sad, sad, sad all around.

(31,849 posts)The guy that profits on big government expenditures and whose wife worked in the defense/law enforcement/intelligence industry, fears a second President Obama presidency? Even with the defense budget's increasing at a decreasing rate, the military was one of the few areas of public sector growth.
It needs to be said ... so I'm gonna say it ... That "mental illness" he, and so many others, suffered with is called "cognitive dissonance."

(51,666 posts)This is what happened I believe. I do feel sorry for people who have been so wound up that they are truly scared. Low information voters who believe every idiotic lie about Obama that shows up in their email in screaming capital letters.
