2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumState Sen. Nina Turner crushed it on MSNBC in support of Sen. Bernie Sanders!
Here are some quotes from former Ohio State Senator Nina Turner:
"Well all good Democrats should be fighting for universal health care. It is unfortunate that the Secretary (Clinton) has a different vision in 2016 than she had then (when she was 1st Lady) when she was fighting for universal health care."
"Nobody owns the Black vote. The Black vote should be earned. And it's curious to me that our folks are the only voting block where people assume which direction we are gonna go in."
"My message to the Black community this morning, and to all communities, is that no one should allow themselves to be taken for granted. And unfortunately lots of times the Democratic party, itself as a whole, has taken the African-American community for granted. So nobody owns our vote, they have to earn our vote."
"Sen. Sanders has the strongest racial justice program and platform of any candidate running for President - Democrat or Republican."
She quotes Tupac Shakur: "'We got money for wars but we can't feed the poor'"
"We cannot go from 'Yes We Can' to 'No We Can't'. "
"Senator Bernie Sanders is the symbol for all that is right in this country and he will continue to stand up and fight against the status quo. And that is why African-Americans should vote for him, 'cause we have been victims of the status quo for generations."

I grew up in a racist place. When I went to high school, EVERY student was white. I heard a rumor that a black family moved into town years ago, but they were soon burned out (arson). How evil. Racism is evil. When I visited my grandparents one summer, I befriended an AA girl and just being with her going around town gave me a lesson on how bad racism is.

(218 posts)will you concede the fact that your characterization could be construed as "racist"? Do you not see the code words you used could be misinterpreted? If you thought that the body language was inconsistent with the message, that would have been enough. Just recognize that people have different connotations for words; what you wouldn't consider offensive as a word or phrase can be offensive to someone else based on their experiences. Ultmiately, what you say says nothing about others but everything about yourself and your perspective. I don't think your intent was to be racist but we can't read your heart; only the words on the page.

While I don't necessarily agree with the identification, you should be ashamed for using such a term. (3,900 posts)I see you really got slammed for your comment, which I'm sure you did not mean to sound the way it did. However, please be mindful and sensitive to the fact that women, especially black women, are often accused of sounding hostile, aggressive, combative, and similarly pejorative terms when they are simply being assertive.
My take on her was that she sounded strong and enthusiastic. But as I was watching it, I thought, "Uh-oh - some people won't react well to this." Not because I thought she sounded angry or too forceful, but because I know how black women are often perceived.
I say this not to add to the pile on - which I thought was far nastier and hostile than your comment warranted - but as a friendly suggestion that you see this as a teaching moment.

President Obama fought for and signed the Fair Sentencing Act, reducing the disparity in penalties for the use of crack and powder cocaine. http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/08/03/fair.sentencing/
He has repeatedly moved to commute the sentences of nonviolent drug offenders. Last July he commuted 46 in one day, the most commutations in a single day since at least the administration of President Lyndon Johnson. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/07/13/here-are-the-46-people-whose-sentences-obama-just-commuted/

(1,508 posts)is rigged so that only two parties dominate, the AA vote is often taken for granted. Hillary Clinton feels that attaching herself to the coat tails of President Obama she will automatically gain the AA vote....I have to say she is sooooo mistaken it isn't funny. African Americans vote democratic the majority of the time because the republicans make no bones about their disdain for anyone that isn't white and male. Having said that, I have to say that the primaries are an opportunity for all democrats regardless of race, color or creed to voice their opinion on which way they feel the nation should go, and which politician they feel can take us there. Hillary believes that every AA would automatically wish to see the legacy of President Obama continued, but she is wrong in feeling that way. Many AA disagree with some of the policies of President Obama, and do not feel that the policies they do agree with will necessarily be carried on by Hillary and Bill Clinton, a couple that has been disastrous for the AA community during their last time in office. And yes I do mean their last time in office. As Bill said during his election, "vote for me and you get two for the price of one." If that's the case, this AA says we have had enough of those two.

(750 posts)What politics jumps out is obvious
The real honest question that will not be answered is the political basic rule, or for a fact of life.
Whats in it for that political person. Each politician wants to move up in power and money exampled by the vast majority of Congress or Senate are millionaires many times over.
From my view a difficult message, and a misnomer that was perpetrated by John F. Kennedy in his one liner. A reason Kennedy was dispelled in a very hash way.
Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.
This can be easily thought of as here is a political person who should service his constituents but is asking what will he, Kennedy, get in return to help you the citizen, however, we know the one percenters are ahead of the pecking order.
The point is care must be taken in political stumping saying things over and over. As exampled by Obama Yes We Can. but confronted by those loading up Republicans bias bigots, banking frauds, Bush 911 war profiteers and Cheney Brigands O no you wont.
Easy to upset someone in the Kennedy era, so they put blame it on the Russians, then, later Chinese, now Islamic crazy.
It does not matter white or Black person with natural human function recorded since the time of Christ. Money or position is in the evolving process.
With that said cutting to the chase Mrs. Turner after thoughtful in thinking didnt get what she knows is her worth that is working through the ranks or is being advised in away were she did not get enough of enough of enough.
