Florida Times Union:Obama leads Romney 49%-46% in new Florida Poll

Florida Times Union (Jacksonville, FL. Newspaper)-Overwhelming majorities with black and Hispanic voters have helped President Barack Obama to a slim lead in the Times-Union’s Insider Advantage/Majority Opinion Research Florida Presidential Poll released Tuesday.

Among likely voters, 49 percent favor Obama for November’s election and 46 percent like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

One percent backed other candidates and 4 percent were undecided.

The poll of 540 Floridians has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

Obama won in 2008 by energizing the youth vote, but Floridians in the 18-to-29-year-old age bracket favor Romney, 48-38. Conversely, seniors favor the president by 47-46.

Other demographics were more typical:

■ More men (48-43) favored Romney; women (55-44) chose Obama.
■ Blacks (87-12) and Hispanics (66-34) tilted heavily to the president; whites (56-38) are equally strong for Romney.
■ Republicans (86-12) are overwhelming for Romney and Democrats (88-8) are almost exclusively for Obama. Independents (45-41) break for Romney.

In poll after poll, President Obama leads with that age group. This poll is definitely off if they are coming out with numbers like that. 10 points ahead in that group for Romney? I don't think so.

So Obama might be a couple of points further ahead.

So those anomalies seem to cancel each other out in this poll.

The important thing is the trendline and overall lead.

Obama has been ahead in almost all Florida polls lately.
