2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Case Against Bernie Sanders
Until very recently, nobody had any cause to regret Bernie Sanderss presidential campaign. Sanders is earnest and widely liked. He has tugged the terms of the political debate leftward in a way both moderates and left-wingers could appreciate. (Moderate liberals might not agree with Sanderss ideas, but they can appreciate that his presence changes for the better a political landscape in which support for things like Mitt Romneys old positions on health care and the environment were defined as hard-core liberalism.) Sanderss rapid rise, in both early states and national polling, has made him a plausible threat to defeat Hillary Clinton. Suddenly, liberals who have used the nominating process to unilaterally vet Clinton, processing every development through its likely impact on her as the inevitable candidate, need to think anew. Do we support Sanders not just in his role as lovable Uncle Bernie, complaining about inequality, but as the actual Democratic nominee for president? My answer to that question is no.
Here's the link to an absolutely great timely read. http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2016/01/case-against-bernie-sanders.html#
These are my issues with Bernie Sanders. He's running for activist in charge. He has not been honest with his supporters especially with those individuals who do not understand the basics of our Representative government. OTOH, Hillary Clinton is running for President of the United States which is why #ImWithHer

(16,916 posts)You didn't have to declare yourself a Clinton supporter, condescending comments like this last post would have been all the clue we needed.

(5,420 posts)another grade school standard response I have noticed lately from the terrified Hillary supporters. This kind of dismissiveness is one of the problems with Hillary and why she is so disliked.

(5,420 posts)Have you seen the post on the DLC plans to replace her if Bernie wins the first one or two states? It was mentioned after the last debate and again on Morning Joe, I think. They DO NOT want Bernie at any cost because things will change.
here's one, and I think there is another link to Harold Ford saying pretty much the same thing.

(5,420 posts)Really. We can't survive our corporate overlords any longer. They have pretty much taken it all. Hillary will be a slightly slower death for us but in the end we all lose everything. I hope all of the Hillary supporters and the regular republicans don't get the chance to watch someone in their family die or live a life without hope or joy like some of us have been so lucky to have experienced. But if yhey did perhaps they would understand.
Remember when Bush said he would like things like the Saudi do? All dirt poor with a uber rich ruling class and no elections. We are heading that way fast. Of course only if we don't fuck up the planet beyond it's ability to sustain life first.

(253 posts)Is getting old. Those who support Sanders have their reasons. Saying that Sanders supporters don't understand how government and the presidency works and only Clinton supporters are the rational ones does nothing to improve your standing with any Sanders supporters.

In any case, with y'all around, GDP gets a little damp.

(6,282 posts)And he intends to fight and wants us with him to effect real change. Most Sanders supporters, certainly all at DU, understand this.
I do think you are being condescending with your characterization of the level of knowledge Sanders supporters have about our system of government, and I do not appreciate the tone.

A socialist can't win
He hasn't been vetted
He's too radical...unelectable
He can't get anything done with a republican congress...
Blah blah blah...Heard it all before.
Although my favorite twist was this: Things aren't really that bad!

He's a Jew
He doesn't comb his hair
He's a communist
He's a cranky old man
He's mad all the time
He screams instead of talking
He has a black problem
He has a women problem
He will never win because this country won't elect a socialist(this one is marginally insulting but still)
If he does win he'll cost the Democrats the election
His policies are too extreme(without explaining which ones)
He's not a Democrat(even though he's running as one and has caucused with them for 2 decades)
His voters aren't really Democrats(most of us are old Democrats-32 years in the party myself)
His voters are Republicans
His voters are too far to the left
Only old hippies support him
His supporters are Dude-bros
His supporters are crazy for supporting him(marginally insulting but debatable)
He hasn't done anything in congress
He's a parish to the Democrats and they hate him

(975 posts)As well as locking up every Democrat and Republican currently in congress and out. I'm perfectly ok with that. Each and every one should be in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas right now. That would work fine by me.
As a US Navy Veteran, anyone who would willingly send soldiers into a war of profit should be held accountable. It should also disqualify any candidate from any office above dog catcher.

(5,811 posts)"The Sanders campaign represents a revolution of rising expectations." The relationship between the rising expectations and the political landscape on which Sanders' is proposing change borders on delusional. But it is not the politician's responsibility to examine the degree the policies can be realistically be implemented. That is the responsibility of the voter.
