2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy mom is worried Bernie winning, will get a Republican elected.
She says a lot of middle class white people will vote against him because they do not want to help POC.
She said Bernie is pie in the sky.
There's no converting her.

(18,133 posts)but JRLeft's mom is worried that white folks will vote against bernie because he favors poc, and you agree that that's a good reason not to support him?
First, you're against fighting for the working class and now you're condoning racism?

Guess she's unelectable now since she plans to help PoC huh? Or will she be revising those plans now that wanting to help PoC is a bad thing when it comes to electability?

Hope over time you can help her come around to supporting Bernie.

If she wants to join the HRC "No We Can't" campaign, that's her choice. While we still have a choice.

(3,900 posts)They are so caught up in being in the "cool kids" clique and looking down their noses at anyone who is not with them. They see the Sanders campaign as an exclusive club in which only certain people are good enough to join - everyone else, in their view, is a jerk and they don't want them in the room.

(16,038 posts)It took an assload of white people including many right of cwnter to elect him. I can understand her incredulity, but it is a different world than even 10 years ago....those who would not vote for a candidate because of race are relatively few and dying off quickly now....

(14,593 posts)to vote. In addition, we have a local and state party apparatus whereby a person can leverage their opinion by getting involved.
We're not going to change her vote, but Bernie is getting mine. And my son's. And my two daughters'. My wife has also decided to support Sanders. In addition, many of the people with whom I work support Sanders.

(10,345 posts)It's okay though. We all have family like that.
But the truth is, the majority of white people don't want to oppress POC these days. The younger generations have been integrated for a while. People see eye to eye a lot more frequently.

(6,697 posts)It tells me your Mom believes there is no way for minorities to get fair representation in American government.

(18,133 posts)i agree that bernie is likely to be a better candidate for minorities. i also believe hillary already has and will do her best to be both the candidate with the Rosa Parks logo and the candidate that tells blm "i will only speak to white people." triangulation to the clintons is like breathing to you and me.
you might point out to her that what seems to be happening is that much of america is sick of politics as usual. that is why both trump and sanders are getting so much traction.
and that thinking-people who are sick of the same-ol-same-ol are coming out for bernie, while the knuckle draggers are going for trump.
they are both also energizing people who often sit out elections. if hillary becomes the democratic nominee, i expect many of these apathetic types to sit it out again, or worse go for trump if he's the republican nominee.
youth are overwhelming going for bernie and if he's not our nominee many of them are likely to bail as well
finally, if hillary is the nominee, the wacky right will come out in droves even if it's to vote for jeb simply because they have a mouth frothing hatred of hillary.
i'm confident bernie gives us the best chance to win in the ge.

(5,252 posts)...politics is ugly stuff. You resort to anything, including Fox style fear bating tactics. It turns out Rs are the way they are because they are motivated by fear. Dems, on whole, shouldn't be but those who are found their way to DU.
Fear is irrational, wisdom is quite the opposite. I really don't care what you do, I just care that you're prone to be manipulated by fear and that Hillary supporters are reinforcing it and implying it's rational (wise). Though both choices are good, they have different histories and priorities. What are your values and priorities? Why do you think Bernie can't beat a Republican? Is it too early to make a decision? Things have changed significantly in just the last month. That's making Hillary's supporters very nervous. As a result, they are fear mongering.
I'm in Illinois. There's absolutely no reason for me to panic had I been on the fence. If you have time, take your time. Things are changing rapidly.
Good luck!

(32,886 posts)Trump or Cruz. We don't know the answer to that yet, but both of those guys have proposed and said very extremist things likely to turn off wide swaths of the electorate and they have said them repeatedly.
What we also know is that consistently polling shows that 50% of the country has said they will not vote for a Socialist candidate. We also know that proposing a middle class tax increase has badly hurt several Democratic Presidential nominee's candidacies.
Both of those issues are ripe for the GOP strategists and those who create their ads to exploit, particularly in combination.
Hillary will have a tough time if nominated. No question about that. Sanders will not be in the ballpark.

(10,650 posts)We don't know which loon the repubs are going to nominate. Hillary would handily beat most of their potential nominees.
If the repubs nominate someone who can pass as a moderate, then Hillary would be in trouble. But do they even have such a potential candidate?
DisgustipatedinCA
(12,530 posts)Clinton would lose to either Trump or Cruz. Republicans have professionally hated her for years. She's no great prize for liberals--she spent last week lying about our candidate. She's not going to win.
BillZBubb
(10,650 posts)She would crush both Trump and Cruz in a general election.
Republicans will end up hating the Democratic nominee whoever that may be. So, Bernie has no advantage there. As for the left, I can't speak for others, but I will totally support Hillary if she is the nominee. I'd love to see Bernie get it, but if he doesn't that won't dissuade me from working to defeat the republican loon.

(99,716 posts)I worked in a small business, maybe ten or so employees, so the owner was the boss... He was kind of a big guy, intense, and scary looking. To describe him further would lead me to traffic in ethnic stereotypes which I am always loathe to do... If one of us screwed up, his hands would literally shake and he would say "it's my f-----g money."
I don't think he would been that upset if a family member was ill...
There is a paradox. Polling suggests that there is a desire for a potpourri of social programs. The same polling suggests these same people want others to pay for it.
I can be disinterested. I haven't had to file tax returns since 2009 since I haven't met the income threshhold.

(16,399 posts)And they campaigned for McGovern, and my father supported Kucinich, Harkin, Bill Bradley against Gore, etc....
My mother, however, supported Hillary in '08 (although she likes Obama) and does now. I do think she really wants a woman president.
But they both say America will not vote for a socialist Democrat, even though they support most of his positions.
Once again, I'm undecided. But I can't figure this election out. I just don't get how there are people who want Trump and Bernie as their 1A and 1B, and there are a lot of them.

(46,179 posts)a hardcore lover of all things Clinton until she learned about Bernie Sanders, has dropped HRC like a rock and is enthusiastically supporting Sanders.
Since she doesn't follow politicians and campaigns outside of what she hears on the MSM, she frequently asks me, "Do you think he can really win?"
And I tell her, every time, "Of course he can. He IS winning over one voter at a time, slowly but surely. It won't be easy. It will be a fight, and the outcome certainly isn't guaranteed, but he's got a good chance. Keep helping."
