Related: About this forumWhy Bernie Sanders is going to Alabama two weeks before the Iowa caucuses
The trip underscores both Sanderss confidence that hell still be running strong after New Hampshire and the importance of African-American voters if Sanders is going to be competitive with Clinton over the long haul.
The rally, on Martin Luther King Day, is being billed as an opportunity for Sanders to discuss the legacy of the civil rights leader and the ongoing fight for racial justice. Sanders will be joined by two of his most visible African American supporters: the academic Cornel West and Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator with a national reputation in Democratic politics.
We are running a national campaign, said Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver when asked about the timing of the rally. We anticipate that there will absolutely be a very active contest after the first two states.

Tad Devine, a longtime Democratic operative and leading Sanders adviser, said the Birmingham rally is an opportunity for [Sanders] on Dr. Kings birthday to showcase a cause thats been a central part of the work of his life. Its a national stage on a national holiday.

As a student at the University of Chicago in the early 1960s, Sanders was active in the civil rights movement. He traveled to Washington in 1963 for the March on Washington, where King gave his I Have a Dream speech.
Sanders has argued that his message of economic justice should resonate with African Americans once they get to know him better, and in recent months he has put a big emphasis on criminal justice reform, another priority for many black voters.

Uncle Joe
(58,405 posts)just a means to their ends; making the nation and government subservient to the less than 1%.
They know that the best way to achieve those ends are to divide the American People whether it be along lines of race, gender, religion, culture, sexual orientation, nationality ett. etc.
That's a major reason that Trump is leading their pack, whether it's the Mexicans or the Muslims, he provides ready scapegoats for their own misdirected miseries.

(16,286 posts)Ask them about their experiences with red lining and racism and Jim Crow still alive.
I wont go on because it isnt my place to do so.
Are you not a minority?

Divide and Conquer is their mantra but power and wealth are the motivations behind it.
I'm not suggesting that racism isn't a very real dynamic, I'm just highlighting the primary reasons that it's played the way it is in the U.S. by those at the top.

(16,286 posts)Racism isnt played by anybody, it is systemic and at the very root being of most white Americans.

The moment they come to the realization that racism doesn't benefit them, the corporate media conglomerates for one will dramatically alter the way they report the news.
The average Jane or Joe doesn't own the corporate media conglomerates, those are properties of the less than 1%.

I'm all for Bernie. I love the idea of celebrating this day in a special way. That gets the word out, moves things forward, honors the man, and draws on that to do more in the future.
I even mostly like Cornel West.
It's just that many of my friends clue me in on the fact that he is not well-loved in the Black community. Let him still e a supporter, but please find somebody else for the heavy lifting.
