The Greatest Korean Drama Sword Fight: Six Flying Dragons 육룡이 나르샤

The Greatest Korean Drama Sword fight Lee Bang Ji vs Gil Tae Mi Six Flying Dragons Epi 18, 9 min, English subs.

Six Flying Dragons is a highly rated Korean historical drama about the founding of the Lee Dynasty aka Chosun dynasty and the overthrow of the Koryeo Dynasty. There is a dramatic speech by the corrupt killer Gil Tae Mi, when mortally wounded at 4:40. He rose to the top of Koryeo society as the paid killer for a small band of corrupt aristocrats. He tries to justify his life with the "universal rule" of the strong dominating the weak as the way of the world.

The rebel founders of the Chosun dynasty in 1392 believed in an enlightened Confucian conception of monarchical rule limited by advisory institutions composed of scholars and nobles ruling in the interests of the people. This conception persisted more or less as it endured for 500 years with a checkered history including invasion, war, inequality, slavery, injustice, isolation, and oppression.

"Joseon consolidated its effective rule over the territory of current Korea and saw the height of classical Korean culture, trade, literature, and science and technology."

The swordsman, Lee Bang Ji was the personal bodyguard of the scholar, Jang Dojeon, the intellectual force behind the rebellion and the founding of Chosun.

After Yi Seong-gye (Taejo of Joseon) founded Joseon in July 1392, he appointed Jeong Dojeon to the highest civilian and military office simultaneously, entrusting him with all necessary power to establish the new dynasty. Deciding all policies from military affairs, diplomacy, and down to education, he laid down Joseon's political system and tax laws, replaced Buddhism with Confucianism as national religion, moved the capital from Gaeseong to Hanyang (present-day Seoul), changed the kingdom's political system from feudalism to highly centralized bureaucracy, and wrote a code of laws that eventually became Joseon's constitution. He even decided the names of each palace, eight provinces, and districts in the capital. He also worked to free many slaves and reformed land policy.

Jeong Dojeon was later murdered by Yi Bangwon, Taejo's fifth son, and later King of Chosun.

I'm currently watching a Tree with Deep Roots an earlier tv drama in which the historical themes from Six Flying Dragons appear in the reign of Sejong the Great, one of Bangwon's children. Tree With Deep Roots - 뿌리 깊은 나무 available on Viki premium. Sejong is credited with the creation of the Korean alphabet, Hangul and an enlightenment style rule.
