Fukushima village marks coming of age
New adults pose for a photo at the coming-of-age ceremony in Kawauchi, Fukushima Prefecture, on Tuesday.
FUKUSHIMA--The Kawauchi government in Fukushima Prefecture on Tuesday held a coming-of-age ceremony in the village for the first time in two years.
The village was opened to residents in April after its no-entry zoning, which had been in place since the onset of the crisis at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, was removed. Last year, the ceremony was held in Koriyama, in the same prefecture, where the village office's functions were relocated.
Thirty-two new adults attended the ceremony. Some were reunited with each other for the first time since the crisis and they enjoyed catching up.
Kawauchi Mayor Yuko Endo said at the ceremony: "Please extend to us your youthful power to help the reconstruction. We will always welcome you warmly."
