New San Diego tourism campaign is focused on China

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — A new marketing campaign by the San Diego Tourism Authority is hoping to attract more visitors from China. This week, the Authority began work on producing video ads in Mandarin Chinese.

The videos were shot in Mission Beach and at other well-known landmarks around San Diego.

Joe Terzi, President and CEO of the San Diego Tourism Authority said the market for visitors from China and Taiwan is enormous. A rapidly growing Chinese middle class with the means to travel translates into new opportunities to boost San Diego tourism.

“China is the number 1 country visiting the U.S. and it’s also the number 1 country visiting California, so we’ve got a great opportunity to take advantage of that,” said Terzi.

In this year’s $20 million advertising budget, the Authority will spend $3 million in partnership with a Congressionally funded group called Brand USA to market and promote San Diego to international travelers.

$1 million of the international budget will be invested in the Chinese tourism market.
