Three Tropical Systems Spin Near Japan At Once; Typhoon Mindulle to Impact Tokyo

NASA satellite image of the three tropical storms near Japan on Sunday.

Satellite imagery this weekend showed an interesting sight near Japan as a trio of tropical systems spun near the country.

On Sunday, Tropical Storm Lionrock was located off of Japan's southwest coast while Tropical Storm Kompasu was well to the north near Hokkaido Island. In between was Tropical Storm Mindulle, which strengthened into a typhoon early Monday morning, local time, and is expected to be the most impactful storm for Japan in the near-term.

As of early Monday morning, local time, nearly 300 flights had been canceled out of Haneda Airport on Tokyo Bay, due to the effects from Typhoon Mindulle.

Tropical Storm Lionrock could affect parts of Japan's Ryukyu Islands in the days ahead as it crawls slowing toward the southwest.

Lionrock and Kompasu are not expected to reach typhoon strength at this time.
