I really respect, let alone appreciate, when a culture or community takes the time and makes the effort to do such things.

We occasionally have fancy crosswalks, or mushroom-painted gas-line things (whatever they are), but one can never have too much beautification

unfortunately for most american towns our governments are required to accept the lowest bid on public projects. this about precludes the investment in this sort of art.
too bad.
i noticed at the link, where one can see the individual manhole-covers, that there was not much road dirt to be seen. won't find that in most american cities or towns either.

of buildings under construction were painted beautiful colors. The taxi seats had lace on them! I admire the Japanese understanding of the human need to see beauty. Thank you, Japan!

I had never heard of these until a few years ago, when manhole cover quilts began to be made.
