S.F. Chinatown home of 'rudest waiter' is closing
As the fate of the Gold Dust Lounge remains in the air, another San Francisco classic is saying goodbye Friday.
Sam Wo, Chinatown's 100-year-old hole-in-the-wall, is closing, much to the chagrin of many locals who grew up on its gruff service, rich noodle soups and late-night chow fun.
The quirky three-story Washington Street restaurant was made famous by the likes of Armistead Maupin, Herb Caen and even Conan O'Brien, thanks in large part to the late Edsel Ford Fung - better known as "the world's rudest waiter."
"It's these kinds of oddities that San Franciscans embrace and support. And that's what makes it sad," said Maupin, the local author who immortalized Sam Wo and Fung in his "Tales of the City."
