Girl bands rock out in style

I visited “GIRLS ROCK SPLASH!!,” a girl rock band event held at the Shibuya eggman club in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward on June 6. Six groups performed, including ReaL, a band made up of four high school girls from Osaka who went on stage in school uniforms.

Vocalist Ryoko strummed her guitar while saying, “People sometimes say we only look like idols ... But we want to do something cool!” Their hard rock performance wowed the audience.

“I don’t want to do badly with all these people in the audience, so I really get fired up,” Ryoko said. “I think it’s natural that boy [rock] bands are cool ... When a girl rock band is cool, I feel like it’s kind of special.”
