Kyoto looks to promote its little known hot springs
KYOTO -- Japan's pre-eminent sightseeing spot Kyoto, visited by some 50 million tourists a year, plans to step up advertising of its over 30 hot springs starting fiscal 2015.
The Kyoto Municipal Government views its hot springs as an untapped tourism resource. The city and the operators of its hot springs will meet and start advertising efforts by creating multi-language websites and maps to the hot springs.
The municipal government and business operators hope that bringing more visitors to the hot springs will boost tourism in the cold winter months.
As of Jan. 15 this year, the Kyoto Municipal Government had awarded hot spring use licenses to 42 locations, over 30 of which are operating. They range across locations including Arashiyama mountain, a major tourist location, Ohara, a long-time favorite site where people have gone to bathe and treat illnesses, Kitashirakawa, home to hot springs with some of the highest amount of radium in the country, and areas in the urban parts of the city including in front of Kyoto Station.
