Could recreational marijuana help pay S.D. teachers?

South Dakota voters could boost funding to teachers and reduce the state's sales tax burden by supporting a ballot measure aimed at legalizing marijuana for recreational use.

And the measure's sponsors are hoping to emphasize that point as they ask voters to sign petitions that could put the question on the 2018 ballot.

Under the proposal, South Dakota residents 21 and older would be able to legally possess and use one ounce of cannabis or grow five marijuana plants. Non-residents would be limited to a quarter ounce.

As part of the measure, sales and excise tax collected for the sale and transfer of marijuana could flow to the Department of Education for teacher pay and school supplies, to the Department of Health for drug prevention and abuse education campaigns and to law enforcement agencies to help police illegal drug use and sale.

South Dakota sees record pig production

PIERRE | South Dakota's 900 pig growers ranked third-best in the nation with a record number of pigs per litter in a recent three-month span.

The state was only behind Nebraska and Minnesota, reaching 11.3 pigs per litter, the Pierre Capital Journal reported.

Glenn Muller, executive director of Sioux Falls' South Dakota Pork Producers Council, said the record is a sign of improving management by hog farmers and a high health/low disease environment.

"It's improved management, improved health status, improved nutrition, improved genetics and improved environment, all those things," he said Thursday. "In South Dakota we have a lower density of sows and of pig farms than the adjoining states. That allows us to have a higher level of bio-security and less chance of hogs being exposed to disease."
