First winter storm of 2024 could hit Central Virginia this weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — There’s an old weather saying that tends to be true more than not, and it goes something like this: “Thunder in winter, snow in seven days.”

If you think back to last Friday many of us heard thunder and saw lightning. Now, seven days from last Friday could be the day of change leading into a major winter storm this coming Saturday.

Over the weekend the models began to show the development of a major winter storm in the Tennessee Valley and Northern Gulf Coast states for later Friday night heading into Saturday morning. That system would rapidly deepen and strengthen as it moves into Virginia during the day on Saturday before sliding up toward New England early Sunday morning.

While the exact track has to be determined, it is important to understand that a major winter storm will be bearing down on Virginia for the first weekend of 2024.

It’s a rare event here in WNC the last decade. I am passionate about Cross Country Skiing on the parkway, have been since I moved here after the Navy in 78. I bought some amazing new skis and boots about 8 or so years ago. Never have had a chance to use them. The boots may rot or “I” may, if I can’t get a good snow soon. I would be happy if it just covered the Parkway and not offend snow haters. The blizzard of 93 was the time of my life. Over a month of snow on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Nearly killed my good friend up to Waterrock Knob
For his first ever ski attempt. 6 feet of new snow, had to break new tracks, 20 degree temps, down to 11 at the summit at sunset, ski back down in a Full moon. He lived, never to ski again.
Please be the year 2024. At least one more before I decompose.
