Southern and northern lights sweep planet in stunning display of auroras

Not for me. It was clouded over in northern Virginia. Maybe tonight, but where I live, light pollution is a way of life.

A lot of these pictures are time-lapse.

The northern lights were visible as far south as Arizona and Arkansas in the United States, and there were numerous reports in Virginia and Maryland. We have photos from four continents and more than 20 states:

A “severe” solar storm triggered the outburst of auroras. Even California, Arizona, Arkansas and Virginia reported sightings.

Was looking at a crescent moon setting as Hale-Bopp brightened at dusk and then a sudden wild flare of the northern lights in colored curtains just burst out. It literally knocked me to my knees.

wonder if they're visible in SoCal. Saw them a few times in northern Michigan. Spectacular!
