AccuWeather CEO steps down to pursue role in Trump administration

AccuWeather CEO Barry L. Myers has stepped down as officer and director and sold all his interest in the company to move into a role leading the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Myers' departure was effective Jan. 1.

He was nominated in October by President Donald Trump to become the undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and administrator of HOAA. He was approved by a Senate committee, and his nomination was forwarded to the full Senate for confirmation, but did not receive a vote before the 115th Congress expired. He will now need to be re-nominated by the president, according to a news release from AccuWeather.

Another joke agency head. I stopped using accuweather after this latest two-day storm in which it predicted little chance of snow as four inches started to fall and a little snow after it already hit. Didn't know the CEO was a trumper but another reason to give it the boot.

Oh the stories I could tell you about this organization (but I'd probably get sued). Knew a couple of people who worked for them back 25 years ago now. I guess they know the business enough to have built themselves into a rather large corporation but like a lot of companies, they seem to have accomplished this without being very endearing. Going through the comments on the link below may provide some insight on their workings. I don't expect Barry to be someone who would be able to run NOAA very well based on what I've heard (not a warm fuzzy type of CEO).

Trump considers the head of Accuweather, a terribly inept and ineffective service, to be among "only the best people?"

Why am I not surprised?

NOAA does so much more for our environment than weather forecasting but Trump is too stupid to realize it.

He's an idiot.

I was the Graduate Student representative to the Board of Trustees, of which he was a member. This is bad news. He's also a climate change denier.

He got the boot off the Board about 5 years ago and got granted the title of Trustee Emeritus (can't disparage a PSU donor of his caliber). This is his (lawyer) brother who was one of the founders of AccuWeather. An old colleague of mine was in some of the same meteorology classes as Joel. I can tell you that my good friend took quite a bit of joy when he out forecasted Joel and his close buddies way back then. That should tell you a little bit more about Joel's personality, which also tells you how he ran his company. (Hint, hint, nudge, nudge, say no more...)
