Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumHi everyone. I'm an agnostic and I like you guys.
I like this group, too. Even though I don't post much in here, I am a subscriber and I read here almost every day. I really don't think my views on religion differ too much from most of what I read here. I prefer the "agnostic" label, although some of you and many over in the religion group would probably refer to me as an atheist if I were to share my views on religion. I've referred to myself as an atheist before, but I think agnostic more accurately describes me now days. It also helps keep me out of trouble with my Episcopalian wife. I really do like Jesus, honey.
So keep on doing what you're doing and don't let these labels get in the way. We are all just seeking the truth here and keeping an open mind. I don't think it's all that complicated.

(6,271 posts)The mere fact that that place is hell shouldn't interfere with our being a big happy family while we're still breathing.
There's strength in numbers.

(6,271 posts)they always split up.
Then they get picked off one by one. Except the cutest girl.

(10,418 posts)And we've had some problems here recently, but I still think this is one of the sanest forums on DU. You'd think some of that sanity would rub off on the trolls after a while.

(3,622 posts)I am an atheist and I like the agnostics on this forum. My questions is the one in question really an agnostic. His views on evolution are out of bounds as far as I am concerned.

(6,271 posts)because he was an atheist and she was an agnostic? Somebody needs to explain that that was a joke.

(10,418 posts)If you bother to read up a little on evolution it doesn't take long to realize that it's about as close to fact as you can get in science. The evidence all points there. We can leave a little room for adjustments and a remote idea that could shake things up, that's about it.
Just stopping and taking a look around and observing reality with as clear a mind as you can seems difficult for many people to do. We all have our baggage and preconceived notions. It might be impossible to completely see reality without bias. But I think we all can see clearly enough to be free of superstition. Why people, intelligent people, hold onto it I'm not sure. But I think we are making progress.

(3,622 posts)evolution is fact but around the edges is where the "controversy" is but that amounts to <5%. Are you on Dawkins side that evolution is a steady state situation or on Gould's side with puncuated equilibrium plus a couple other minor points.
Tobin S.
(10,418 posts)But I have read Sagan and Shermer and have taken a few science courses at the college level. So I'm not exactly an authority on the matter. I think punctuated equilibrium means that evolution happens in spurts and that would make me a spurtist. So I guess I'm on Gould's side. I've heard some good things about him. I should probably read a book or two of his.

(3,622 posts)is "The Structure of Evolutionary Theory" by Stephen Jay Gould published in 2002 by the Belknap Press of Harvard University Press.
I'll check it out.

(18,219 posts)You are smart to keep your wife happy.....I know how happy you were to find her. Atheist, agnostic, it really doesn't matter to me. In fact, believer doesn't matter to me as long as you don't judge me harshly or try to convert me.
Good to hear from you, and don't be a stranger.

(9,356 posts)At least IMO, those who try the hardest to make it complicated fall into 2 camps:
(a) Sophisticated Theologians who want to make sure we've considered every seam and stitch of the Emperor's fine new clothes...before we decide he's not only buck naked, but probably an exhibitionist and weenie-wagger as well.
(b) Faitheists and accomodationists, who have the curious habit of championing non-belief by attacking non-believers relentlessly. While chiding us about being too mean to our "natural allies," the believers.
And the believers are happy to have our support, as long as we Know Our Place. If one message comes thru loud and clear, that one does.
But I'm not bitter...

(22,434 posts)I sometimes call myself an agnostic, but only in public, because
the term "atheist" is mis-defined and misunderstood by believers.
The definition of an agnostic as an atheist with an inferiority complex makes me smile,
even as I use the term in public....
On edit: I've always been a fan of your writings and musings on-line.
You have the ability to sweep the reader up and take them along.
Rare.

(10,418 posts)I haven't been consistently writing for a while now. I've just got so much going on in my life right now: Full time job, part time school, keeping up the house, trying to make a baby. I wish I could scratch off the first two and devote all that time to writing, but I haven't been able to make it pay the bills.
I'll tell you what. I'll see about writing a little story just for this group. Check back here later tonight or tomorrow. Satan knows I've gotten plenty of entertainment from this group. I'll give a little back.
