1. Why wouldn't I celebrate christmas as an atheist?

It has nothing to do with a fictional baby born on the 25th of December. Besides, I love given gifts.

2. Oh, I'm a sucker for celebrating.

Just watch me at easter as my wife grills up her delicious lamb chops with a salt, garlic powder and tarragon rub. Perfect medium rare, lightly blanched asparagus with lots of butter and creamy mashed potatoes.

If I were invited to an eid feast, I'd go to that too. I can be very polite to religious folks if they want to feed me!! I'd have to sneak my beer in a big gulp cup, though. 😆

I love secular Christmas. Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, the Grinch, they are all part of my Christmas. We give gifts, decorate a tree make good food. It's fun with family time.

4. Why wouldn't you celebrate Christmas?

Aside from the name, very little of Christmas whoop-de-doo has anything at all to do with Christianity. Christmas trees, lights all the hell over the place, feasting, even giving gifts are pagan celebrations to convince the sun to come back. And by glob it works! Every year about this time the hours of daylight (in the Northern Hemisphere anyway) grow ever greater. The person in charge of the sun is pleased by our merriment and reminded by all those lights that it's time to rouse our big star out of her winter slumber.

humans have celebrated the winter solstice for millennia prior to Christian misappropriation.

Those of us who are free from religion are just as entitled to celebrate this time of year as theists.

Just another day, but both of us like to celebrate. I'm sorry about your family and friends. Getting older can really suck. My only condolence for getting old is that I won't be around to witness the further destruction of this earth by rich and powerful forces.

15. I don't know if...

My belief system has a name but I don't get into the religions though I sang in choirs for many years, even performed as Cantor at a Jewish Sater one year. It was because I like the music for technical reasons. A lot of seriously good music used to be composed in religious context and the only way you usually get to perform them is in a choir which always ends up being somehow tied to churches. Just have to navigate around the demons.

16. So much artistry has been commissioned in the name of religion.

Art works, sculptures, buildings, music. Even some literature. So, I guess it isn't all bad. Have a good holiday, especially if you don't have to work.
