Kate Cohen - America doesn't need more God. It needs more atheists.

A memory popped up of seeing the General Discussion thread here at DU about Kate's 10/3/23 column in the WaPo with the title above, but I also remembered that I had not read the column. That thread got 263 replies and can be found here, so I presume a lot of people read it. It's outstanding. You can read it here. You can also actually listen to Kate read this essay herself at the same link. Takes about 25 minutes and really worth it. I could not find a "Gift" link at the WaPo for this one. Maybe because it is over a month old?

I could not attend the FFRF (Freedom From Religion Foundation) convention this past October in Madison, Wisconsin, where Kate was awarded the Freethought Heroine Award. Her acceptance speech is online and about 38 minutes. See below. Also worth it. Thanks, Kate!!

And don't forget Kate's new book, "We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (And Maybe You Should Too)

Like her, I was also a little reticent about my atheism. Could not remember a time when I did believe in that supernatural nothing that I was told to believe in. Sunday school, church, confirmation class (I passed) for Lutheranism, visits to other churches, synagogues, temples, tent revivals, prayer meetings, etc. ad nauseum did nothing but convince me that there is nothing out there. I also knew of the ridicule that would come if ever I did state my atheism.
She writes in her book a question: "Do you believe in a supernatural being in control of the Universe?" If the answer is no (mine was), then you are an atheist.
