Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumData search on ignores
Call me dense (you likely already do) but I just happened on a fun DU datum - people ignoring me. I wonder what the range of "members ignoring me" looks like for vocal atheists at DU. I'm guessing it will be higher than for people who take a similarly strong line against other forms of majoritarianism. Now obviously not everybody ignoring an atheist is doing so because of atheism but I'm pretty sure it's a majority of them. While I make no claims to be particularly warm and cuddly about other issues, it's certainly religious issues that bring out my spiky side most.
I should point out by the way I am neither ashamed nor proud nor bothered by this count and I fully expect that others here will be both less and more ignored. Curiosity only.
I ask so I should tell - I'm at 11. So - how many for the rest of you? Don't be shy. Any perfect virgins here?
Curiously enough 12 people are blocking mail from me. Since I've used DU mail less times than that overall, and rarely initiated mail exchanges (twice maybe when I wanted a "test case" alert), I'm quite curious why somebody would be bothered about the incredibly small chance of my mailing them but not bothered enough to blank me out entirely. Hmm......
EDIT - Side issue: I only have one ignore myself, and it's not for anyone I find abusive or offensive, just a waste of time.
But I don't if it's what I've posted in religion.

Who could they be?
Must admit I'm surprised that it's not more than two.

(5,351 posts)I'm not what one would call vocal, but I suspect it's someone over in the Religion forum who put me on Full Ignore after I called that someone on an obvious lie. (I had zero before that, so it makes sense to me that that's what happened.)
I have 11 on ignore. Three guesses as to which forum most of them are in, and the first two guesses don't count.
Edit: three of them are on there because of smugness, pomposity, and deliberate obtuseness, and one of the three is also a repeated and deliberate shit-stirrer, hence the ignores. It got to be tiresome reading them posting the same things over and over again (and in some cases, deliberately misrepresenting the points some other posters were trying to make or going out of their way to not get those points even when they were clearly explained to them).

(8,830 posts)But I'm not very argumentative - I'll walk away before I get into an online cat-fight with someone I don't know beyond an avatar and a sig line.
If that makes me a wuss, so be it. I've got enough stress without adding on-line 'enemies'.

(14,860 posts)Note to the jury called on this post, "ignorant" was given an alternate definition meaning "one who ignores." http://upload.democraticunderground.com/124025360#post9
"Ignorants" in my comment uses the plural of that definition--there are seven people ignoring me.

(8,830 posts)my new favorite road signs are in Las Vegas - giving directions to the airport. Instead of 'terminals' they say 'termina' . . .
which really doesn't work when referring to multiple passenger terminals. Not even in Spanish, I don't think, and these signs are - presumably - written in English.
I love odd word usage.
dmallind
(10,437 posts)But no idea where termina comes from - the Latin is not neuter
enlightenment
(8,830 posts)There are a couple of forms in Spanish that use the 'a' ending - but neither make any sense for a sign pointing the way to multiple airport passenger terminals . . .
I thought it was a mistake until I saw it repeated on at least three of the new signs they've put up to direct traffic to the airport (they just finished building new access roads - very nice, actually.)

eta: I don't think anyone from the Religion group has me on ignore. I can be a bit nihilistic, but I don't know how bothersome that really is for my fellow DUers. I think I got most of my ignores by defending feminism, which seems to be one of my more controversial view points here on DU. I think most of my posts are fairly tame. I have only had one post hidden on DU3.

(7,981 posts)My ignore list is well over 100. Although I usually don't log in until I post or when the traffic is heavy. So most of the time I read DU unfiltered.

And only 3 on ignore.
dmallind
(10,437 posts)would have guessed a few of the other vocal godless would have raised as much ire at least. Maybe it's my defense of capitalism that does it after all, not dismissal of religion.
EDIT - OK at least I'm not quite the end of the tail. Cleanhippie jumps to the 6-sigma position...
Wonder how many are on both ours?

(49,533 posts)I feel like I've pissed off way more people than either of you. A group host is even shunning me - I bet I should probably count that as an ignore.
So why is my ignored list so small? I feel so inadequate.

(10,437 posts)It's quite possible I'm utterly wrong and my moderate economics position (as opposed to the all-doom rat-stew predictors) is the problem. It may be that I react more to religious blather with scorn outside these topic forums rather than keeping it in house. It may even be the acceptance of guns or the death penalty; it may be my derision of predictable DU poverty-purity spirals where any thread touching on cost of living becomes a 30k a year person being called bourgeoise by a 20k being called elitist by a 15k being called a parasite by a 10k earner. Dunno. I confess I expected higher numbers in this crowd. I wish I could see who they are; not at all for stalking or retribution or silly overreactions like that. I'm not so fragile as to worry about the opinion of a dozen total strangers. I am however intrigued by what kind of opinion causes more people to shut it out than the rest.
As far as I know I'm not extreme in anything on any scale but the humblebum measure of religious normalcy. I get snippy about religion certainly, but I don't call for it to be restricted or contrilled as a private belief. Same with guns or crime etc - my views are well within the moderate center of the spectrum. Economically I'm a bog standard Clintonite. I think the area I get most heated about is the fairly rare one of legalizing and indeed normalizing assisted suicide, but I doubt 11 people have even read my thoughts there let alone decided they were extreme enough to blackball the author.

(49,533 posts)The feathers I ruffle are nearly all in the Religion group. I used to post more in Health, especially on DU2, I'm sure I could probably pick up a bunch more if I ratcheted that up again.

(49,533 posts)You know how to tell, right? Well at least I assume it works the same way on DU3 as it did on DU2. Try to send the person DU Mail - it will return with an error that the user isn't accepting personal messages.
Maybe it will accept the message but not send it on DU3. If there is someone you know is ignoring you, try to send them a PM and see what happens.

(10,437 posts)You can post "X is an utter waste of skin with no more right to live on God's clean earth than a weasel" with the comforting knowledge that X, ignoring you, will only be able to criticize you for it if he is a revealed "cheat" who peeps at his ignore list.
You can praise X unctuously, hyperbolically and repeatedly, knowing that again he should never see it.
You can post topics that you know will attract X's ire, or interest, or fervent support, and snigger that they will remain out of his view.

(28,151 posts)I don't have anyone on ignore because it's easy for me to just skip posts/posters I'm not fond of.
Yet apparently I have managed to make it onto 14 ignore lists. I'm a little surprised by this, simply because I'm not a very visible/vocal presence at DU.
Fortunately this is just the pretend world of obscure internet forum so I don't care very much one way or the other.
But it is awfully nice that all you un-offensive people let me hang out here with you. Rock on all you Pollyannas! (Just kidding, I am shocked at so many of you having none or only a couple ignoring you as I see you out there all visible and vocal and stuff!)
Love this group! You guys always make me laugh and, often, learn.

But I've seen you here at DU for a VERY long time - years and years. I always thought you were one of the most congenial posters around. I've seen you argue with people, but never get abusive or even ranty. AFAIK, you always stayed polite. A lot more polite than I've been, anyway.
