I wasn't trying to be insulting, it was meant to discuss the importance of a mythical event. That claimning that simple fact is an affront to peoples religion is ludicrous.

This is absolutely tasteless (and that is the best thing I can say about it). If you want to insult someone about their religion I suppose that is fine (note I am an atheist but not an ass-hole so I don't even see the pint in that). Posting what appears to be holiday greetings and well wishes to insult people is beyond the pale and not what DU should be about.

As I've ranted before - there's a rich and real historical story about Egypt and the Jews, hidden behind all the mythical glurge about raining frogs etc.

Here are a couple of places to find some of it:

Merneptah Stele - the first direct mention of "Israel" in Egyptian history. Pharaoh Merneptah was the son of Ramses II. The Stele is a straightforward account of a military expedition dealing with various insurgencies, first in Libya then in Palestine.

The Stele brags that "the seed of Israel is crushed. It is no more." Pretty funny, since the seed of Israel today is exactly where it always was. And still annoying the Egyptians.

The Alexandrian Wars, Julius Caesar:

Relief for the Romans came from Mithridates of Pergamum and Antipater from Judea. A final pitched battle was fought on the west side of the Nile River with Caesar victorious and Ptolemy drowning while attempting to cross the river.

Antipater was the father of Herod The Great. He not only sent Julius Caesar badly needed money, but 3,000 Jewish soldiers.

Later, Cleopatra tried repeatedly to take over Judea/Palestine and attach it to Egypt. The Romans put a stop to that. They thought Cleopatra was quite powerful enough already, thank you very much. And they liked the idea of having Judea ruled by a local kinglet like Herod. Especially a kinglet who owed his power to the Romans and wasn't likely to rock the boat. Political boat-rocking being one of Cleopatra's specialties.

20. When "Rome" was on HBO...

I was living in Alexandria. Would downl...er, watch the show. Then go out and try to find real places around the city that sort of matched what they were covering in the series. A fun exercise.

The battle where Julius Caesar nearly drowned was easy. That happened around the Pharos Lighthouse. Marked today by a big 15th-century fort built right on the ruins of the Lighthouse.

One thing that bugged me, and I could be mistaken since it's been a while: when they showed Cleopatra and Marc Antony in her palace, it always appeared to be set in a desert. Lots of sand and desolation.

Maybe that was a secondary palace or something. But AFAIK, they were holed up at the Caesareum - the palace she named for Julius Caesar, which was right in the middle of the city.

In the photo below, the Caesareum was to the right, where all those palm trees stand. Nowadays the site is a public park and major streetcar interchange called Ramleh Square. Just out of frame is a large statue of revolutionary leader Sa'ad Zaghloul. And behind him, on the same plinth, a big statue of Cleopatra:
