And we wonder about some of the jury decisions in the Religion forum...

I actually got picked for "jury" duty for a post in the religion forum.

Here are the results. Take a good look at juror #1 - good grief! I voted to leave it alone.

At Mon Mar 19, 2012, 06:13 PM an alert was sent on the following post:

Spoken like

REASON FOR ALERT:

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate. (See Community Standards.)

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

personal attack, calling the poster "another true believer with Spanish Inquisition Fetish". I don't even know what that means, but it's a personal attack, rude, and uncalled for.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Mon Mar 19, 2012, 06:22 PM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT and said: People need to be extra polite and respectful in the Religion group. This post is over-the-top, insults two groups and fails to advance the conversation.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Seems on-par with the timbre of this whole contentious thread.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: The whole thread reeks of personal insult and petty judgmentalism, from the OP down. This comment is completely in line with the discussion as a whole.

Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.

I think I can explain the connection. No one expects homeopathy to work. dimbear Mar 2012 #3

And respectful? What is this, like being in church?

Well, as long as it isn't someone coming down on an atheist they should be extra polite and respectful. But if it is an atheist being criticized, all bets are off.

"another true believer with a Spanish Inquisition Fetish"--I'm not sure what that even means! Could we use it to create something similar to Godwin's Law? We'd have to substitute Torquemada for Hitler, obviously.

I must have struck a nerve when I called Harkin out for being a homeopathy booster (although now that I think about it, "shill" would've been a better word choice). I'm sure what I posted in response will get either a postmodernist word salad or the usual suspects tut-tutting at me about "other ways of knowing".

FWIW, I don't think the post needed to be hidden. I do think it's tiresome that people are still trying to push the meme that atheism is a religion, though.

but I did not see the need to hide the post. I don't think my previous encounters with the poster should have influenced my decision on this particular post. I usually don't vote to hide a post unless it is grievous attack (just the way I see things). My concerns with the jury system are jurors like juror #1 but the majority of jurors on this issue, IMO, made the correct call. I really can't explain my complete disgust with juror #1 without serious consequences levied against me. There also seems to be an overall bias against atheist in the jury system in the religion forum.

By the way if you have a fetish you should embrace it!
