(18,219 posts)This is true----my boss is a very devote Catholic (think an office with a full size Virgin Mary behind his desk and a picture of the Pope along with a crucifix on the wall). He walks into my office, opens up this snuff tin, dips his thumb in it, and puts a cross on my forehead while praying whatever prayer they say at that time. I know that this is something I should not have to deal with, but I put up with a lot of shit for a paycheck. I found it humorous. Sad, but humorous.
So anyways, do I have to give up something for lent?

(1,951 posts)was just trying to use a time of spiritual contemplation as an excuse to diet. I was Lutheran, and generally you're encouraged but not expected to give up something, and you can pick what it is, so there were always lots of people giving up soda or chocolate or something like that.
So that year, as the huge bibliophile I've always been, I gave up reading any book other than the Bible for Lent. I think I got into Ephesians by Easter? I am pretty sure that amount of close reading of scripture contributed to the demise of my faith.
Either way, I was announcing the end of my Christianity to my family just before Easter the following year. There was no way I was going to be able to spend that whole day pretending to be a believer, going with them to services, participating in the annoying little call-and-response that Lutherans love to do on Easter: "He is risen!"..."He is risen indeed!"
No, Grandpa, sorry, no, he's not.
