New atheist charity asks for one percent

“The Good One Percent Club” is a new charity program launching today and was created by the people of We Are Atheism as part of their “Atheism Giving Aid” initiative. The new program seeks to encourage atheists to donate just one percent of their monthly earnings to charity or $10 a month. This campaign has the added benefit of calling attention to the wasteful spending of church based charities that ask for ten percent of people’s hard earned money – most of which is often wasted on less than charitable endeavors. The people at We Are Atheism are confident that atheists can do more even while giving less.

In the past, Atheists Giving Aid has raised over $75,000 for victims of Sandy Hook, the Boston Marathon Bombings, and the Oklahoma City Tornadoes. A complete accounting of their fundraising efforts is available online. In addition to supporting charitable causes, The Good One Percent Campaign seeks to point out that the for church to demand 10 percent of people’s hard earned money is just greedy and unnecessary.

“This is a direct challenge to churches who have far too often used their well-oiled money raising machine to fund lavish luxuries for priests, political campaigns against the rights of women and gays, to protect sexual predators from the law, and to proselytize to those in need of actual help.”

10% always did seem like a lot to give to the church, especially when you see how much of the money they take in is spent on things that are not related to charity in the least. It is nice to see more ways for atheists to do charitable giving in the name of atheism.
