Because it demonstrates perfectly the inherent conflict between the ideas of a "loving god" and the "I will fucking kill you if you don't believe in me" god.

8. Aw, but that was the grumpy Old Testament god.

Wiped out the entire planet, nuked Sodom & Gomorrah, caused mass Egyptian infanticide, slaughtered anybody sitting on the wrong piece of real estate, etc. etc.

The new, improved, minty-fresh New Testament God didn't do any of that. He just had his son/One-Third of Himself come up with the more progressive idea of ROASTING PEOPLE FOR ETERNITY.

Of course we're not supposed to take that literally. Except when we are. Or something like that.
