Reading posts from some on DU, however, one would think ALL atheists were saying it.

Why the need for such deceit and dishonesty?

Craig Stephen Hicks was clearly an atheist. He didn't believe in gods. I do not dispute this fact AT ALL. Unlike the many individuals who rushed to declare the Charlie Hebdo attackers "not Muslims."

Yet somehow it's all the same. Whatever.

There might be somebody else on DU who said that. As we have only one brain among us, I can reliably state that none of us has said this.

Religion is built on them.

I find it interesting how religious people simply cannot conceive that we atheists do not operate like a religion. It's like out of their field of vision. They simply cannot get it.... that we do not "follow" any atheist leader or have pre-set notions and atheist "laws" propped up by rituals.

Somebody who doesn't believe in god(s). That's the only feature that atheists share, after all.

Hell, before you know it some clown will be urging us to take a hard look at ourselves

It's why we break up into all of these sub denomination of Atheists--We simply can't agree on which God not to believe in, and what specific rituals not to follow.

That must be it!

MSNBC interview with Chris Hayes last night:

"For atheists to think they need to condemn this act is kind of hypocritical for me to expect, because as a Muslim I know that one act of violence does not represent all Muslims and this act does not represent all atheists. And to me... we know this does not represent any sane and loving human being as atheists can be."

He's showing more sense than a lot of cowardly atheists. But he might have even said: as a Muslim I know that one act of violence, even when motivated by religion, does not represent all Muslims and this act does not represent all atheists.

And this act WASN'T even motivated by a lack of belief in gods.

"one act of violence, even when motivated by religion, does not represent all Muslims and this act does not represent all atheists"

Did ANYONE who is currently being chastised by the civility brigade claim that, for instance, the Charlie Hebdo attacks were representative of all Muslims?

ANYONE???

All I've seen the last couple of days has been much thrashing at straw men.

I read quickly because I'm very busy packing today. (Ugh!) So I could be wrong. But I thought I saw someone complaining about Xians being strawmanned.

If so...well, as somebody smarter than me once said: "Irony is a cruel mistress."

I'm packing too, but in my case we're just dividing up our stuff into two big piles: one here in Houston and one in South Texas.

We have entirely too much stuff.

Mostly because of all the books and my Weird Hobby (scale model building). Which are related, since my Weird Hobby demands that I buy oddball reference books about cars, aircraft, tanks and such. Oh, and human figures, which means I also have stuff like "Anatomy for the Artist" laying around.

The Weird Hobby itself means about a gazillion boxes full of plastic/resin parts are in my garage and workshop. A couple of times, while packing boxes today, I fantasized about piling it all up and burning it.

But then I'd never be able to finish my set of People's Liberation Army Female Soldiers On Parade...

so it has been fun watching a few people try to twist this as a mass killing in the name of atheism and the lack of morals among the godless.

They'll be on to another shiny thing soon enough. The smarter ones will also realize that atheism had nothing to do with this, sociopathy did.

I will agree that he acted out of his anti-theist beliefs, and I will re-iterate that anti-theism, for me, is not a belief that anyone does not have the right to believe in any sort of ridiculous bullshit, which by the way is exactly what this guy's facebook post on anti-theism said.

At the moment there is a pile of evidence that he acted out of his parking spot protector beliefs, but I am not a believer in parking spot protection, so I have nothing to answer for.
