Papal Glurge Update - WonderPope Still Wonderful

He's ushered in a REVOLUTION! Well, that's according to one of the Pope's personal P.R. flaks. But I'm sure everyone else will agree with him...

Pope Approves Spanking — Under One Condition

Pope Francis says it’s OK to spank your children to discipline them - as long as their dignity is maintained.

"One time, I heard a father in a meeting with married couples say ‘I sometimes have to smack my children a bit, but never in the face so as to not humiliate them,’" Francis said.

"How beautiful!" Francis remarked. "He knows the sense of dignity! He has to punish them but does it justly and moves on..."

The Rev. Thomas Rosica, who collaborates with the Vatican press office, said the pope was obviously not speaking about committing violence or cruelty against a child but rather about “helping someone to grow and mature.”

"Who has not disciplined their child or been disciplined by parents when we are growing up?" Rosica said in an email. "Simply watch Pope Francis when he is with children and let the images and gestures speak for themselves! To infer or distort anything else … reveals a greater problem for those who don’t seem to understand a pope who has ushered in a revolution of normalcy of simple speech and plain gesture."

I was spanked. It was humiliating. I did not want to be spanked again, and since it wasn't ever a painful spanking, it was the humiliation that made me avoid them in the future. I guess I will have to wait for His Holiness to explain this in more detail.

This sort of advice, a "how-to abuse your child" guide, could have been very helpful a few years ago back before the whole pederasty scandal thing started to go planetary. Think how many abuse cases could have been kept under wraps if only pope ticklesandhugsandcarefulspankings had been in charge.

"normalcy of speech and plain gesture" - wtf?

There have been a number of recent studies that have confirmed that the more you hit your child the dumber they will grow up to be.

Think of where we would be as a species if we had stopped corporal punishment of our children two thousand years ago. For one thing I doubt there would be enough stupid people left to believe in religion, so in a way beatings can be seen as religions natural immune system.

Keeping in the Pope Frank tradition of puppies go to heaven, well maybe not, etc.

If anything, his fellow celibate old men will say he didn't go far enough. "Who gives a shit about the kid's dignity?"

Got it.

Some folks think spanking is sort of sexual, just saying.

Of course they are referring to adults doing it, mutual consent and all.

Catholic conservatives and the pseudo-progressive pope-lovers something to get all giddy about.

Of course, physical abuse of children that falls short of criminal sexual conduct has been a Catholic mainstay for ages. Older folk who grew up in Catholic school were so brainwashed to accept it as normal that they just laugh about being beaten by the nuns, as if it were a good thing.

I don't know anybody who came up in that atmosphere that doesn't laugh about paddling and routinely having their knuckles rapped. Sort of like the military, college fraternity hazing. whatever. Maybe you just gotta' laugh.

As I said, brainwashed to believe that they deserved to be physically abused, and now trying to laugh it off. Sad what the RCC has done to people that way. Not as bad as all of the children they raped and then shamed into silence, but still.

how to rape children without humiliating them? Or maybe on how to sell unmarried young women's babies overseas without soiling their dignity? No, I thought not.

Is sort of what this Pope has inspired in me. A better reaction, I'll concede, than the homicidal rage than "the" leaders of "the" church have provoked in the past. But WTF? It isn't enough that these celibate, misogynistic, totally-removed-from-normal-human-life jerk-offs get to lecture us on sexuality, but when they start in on parenting, I get a little crazy. I await the papal opinion on breast feeding. God knows, they know.

Plain gesture? the guy clarifying made it worse this time, sadly a lot of people still believe in hitting their children. Hitting isn't solving anything, it's pure anger release from the parent on a subject that cannot fight back, and that people won't respect if they are told about it.

Anyone who lays a hand on their kids like that is pure scum.
