with James Inhofe (R-OK) in charge of the Senate Environment committee, what progress can be made?

Increasingly, the opposition to climate change science is coming from religious quarters. Now, thanks to the "election" in November, James Inhofe is most-likely going to chair the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, the committee that directly would deal with climate change.

a taste from here:

Inhofe refuted climate change science in 2012 by citing the Bible. “[T]he Genesis 8:22 that I use in there is that ‘as long as the earth remains there will be seed time and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night.’ My point is, God’s still up there. The arrogance of people to think that we, human beings, would be able to change what He is doing in the climate is to me outrageous.

For anyone still uncertain about where he stands, Inhofe reiterated his position with his 2012 book, The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future.

You see? God wouldn't possibly allow mankind to fuck up the planet, although he apparently doesn't care when individuals fuck up other individuals. That's OK with him, I guess. In fact, he seems to be perfectly OK with EVERYTHING that anyone wants to do (as long as you ask for forgiveness), but lo, he wouldn't allow us to pollute the planet.

Religion is directly going to interfere with humanity dealing with the climate crisis?

With narrow-minded, short-sighted thinking like this, can we expect any progress on the environment for the next two years?

It seems to be getting worse all the time. I don't know if it is that there are too many uneducated religious extremists, or if they are just refusing to admit that science works better than praying. All I know is that science has become the enemy for them...probably because if they allow themselves to believe that science can provide answers, they will have to start to questioning their beliefs.

granted, not very many, but I know there are some.

So if they can accept it, so could Inhofe, which makes me think that the religious objection is not really a religious, valid objection at all. More likely, there is an economic aspect to the objection, as in....Inhofe gets a shitload of money from the fossil fuel industry, but religion gives him a convenient cover to hide behind all the money.

I would even venture to say that most of them do. But it is the noisy ones who are leading the charge against things like the problems with climate change. The most powerful and loudest professers of religion are the ones who have the ability to sway opinion with their piousness. Religion does give Inhofe cover, but too many people believe that God will protect us, not science. Science is being framed as the bogie-man by people like Inhofe....and people are listening.

But they don't need to "believe" any of that. They just need to look around and SEE the evidence that it does.... very well. In fact they take advantage of science about every 5 sec. of their lives.... what with electricity, the internal combustion engine, medicine and anything else our civilized nation provides. They watch the 700 Club on a science created machine, fer Christ sake! They love to dress up their Stone Age arguments in scientific jargon TO MAKE IT SOUND LEGIT.

Hypocrites all.

Every one of these people who find scientific theories and findings to be bunk would not be able to survive without science.

Inhofe is an 80-year-old Bible thumper and he seems to have had a problem with science for quite a long while. I used to think he was a doctor, but nuh-uh, that was his son, who died in a plane crash the first time he flew solo. Or, maybe I was thinking of his fellow OK senator Tom Coburn, who is actually a doctor. Inhofe makes Coburn look like a genius.

Fortunately Coburn will not seek re-election in 2016, but we'll still be stuck with this physically and metaphysically ugly James Inhofe, who is serving his 4th Senate term and was re-elected in 2012.
