(17,505 posts)Whenever I hear the persecution complex coming from some Christian, I just go
"Awwwwww.... look there's a church right there you can go pray about it in....and there's one over there too....and look, I can see 3 steeples over there...and look at this Google map......"

Here or there? I enjoyed the article. I wonder how it will be received as well. One thing they are not RW'ers so there will be no reason to be defensive.
I have a feeling 'our' Christians are the philosophical 'God is Love' type, who volunteer at the soup kitchen, kind of Christians. You know our kind.

(19,288 posts)In our party. Big tent principle as far as I'm concerned. I often frequent the Religion group for the articles. It shows up as my favorite group sometimes. My dad was an atheist. I learned a lot from him. Very rational, logical and scientific. But he was clear that he didn't think it was cool to ever mock the belief systems of others.
I'm not a religious person by any stretch. Much more of an atheist. But l'm the curious type. I love occult knowledge. If it's hidden I want it uncovered.
I just read a really interesting topic about NDE. I can't help but be intrigued.

(18,219 posts)but I have seen some defensiveness here as well as everywhere else. I don't understand why, since they really are not in a position to be defensive. But it happens.

(19,288 posts)Love what you have to say. You have been in there 'debating' haven't you. You have the first hand experience.
We are all on the same voting side. That's what matters. I try to stay neutral if possible. They won't change our minds and we can't change their's. We have to agree to disagree and stay civil. We are Democrats first here is how I feel.
Sometimes I think that conversion experiences and worship services elevate a state of emotional ecstasy that confirms their belief to them. They feel it and and experience a validation of the Divine.
We can't take that away from them. We will never know what they personality experience. Its their reality.
Ours may be appreciation for a sunset or the mountains that us all atwitter.

(18,219 posts)I agree with you about the minds being changed. And yes, we can agree to disagree. But that ends when anyone advocates for any church/state relationship, or doesn't fight against it. I do not care if anyone has religious beliefs, and they are free to believe in whatever they want, but they are not free to impose it on people who do not want to participate.
And speaking of conversion experiences, have you ever been to a real, down-home, tent revival? I have, and you are right about that emotional ecstasy. Whew.

(28,017 posts)If you think about it, their religion requires so much nonsense to be taken on faith, in absence of common sense, science, and logic, that it is no surprise that they become super sensitive about their faith. That easily transfers into a persecution complex when we laugh at their latest idiocy.

(9,356 posts)Working on it, but it's tricky.
We need a lot of comradely labor to finish that 900-foot statue of Richard Dawkins, with the video projectors in the eyes that display quotes from "The God Delusion" on the night sky.
At first this job was assigned to Xians only. The Muslims and Orthodox Jews are going to be plenty busy building the Emma Goldman Re-education Camp. And the $cientologists are working away on the life-size Thetan Volcano for the "Why People Believe Weird Things" exhibit.
So we need more volunteer workers on the Dawkins project, but if we put all these people together in one place, they'll kill each other.
Hmmm...
(Note to spies - just a poor attempt at humor, not a real death/gulag threat.)

(9,356 posts)If we only wanted 'Merkin RW Xians to come flooding in, "Camp Reagan" or "Camp Billy Graham" would do the trick.
Unfortunately, just like American Xians, we have to grudgingly tolerate all those Off-Brand Religions. Until we get them thru the gate, anyway.
So probably "Camp Kumbayah." Or maybe "Camp Respect" or "Camp Tolerance." The possibilities are endless! I'm sure if we go poking around certain corners of DU, we'd come up with many more empty buzzwords that might work.
