Allegheny County's Fitzgerald says he’ll veto ‘In God We Trust’ motion

Councilwoman Sue Means, a Bethel Park Republican, has driven the push for the national motto to be displayed in the Gold Room of the courthouse, where council conducts its twice-monthly meetings. Ms. Means, who says she is an evangelical Christian, wants to see “In God We Trust” installed above a replica of the Bill of Rights.

“It’s our national motto,” she said. “It’s patriotism. It’s history.”

A bid to display the words "In God We Trust" in the Allegheny County Courthouse failed Tuesday night. The vote was six in favor of the proposal and eight against.

As far as they're concerned we're neither patriots nor Americans:

George H.W. Bush: "No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."

...often wasn't harassed in small Southern towns. He was the only person who could translate the Latin phrase on the Confederate memorial.

I think I stole that joke from Florence King, a very rare blend of a person who was funny, bisexual and Republican.

"I know I am a true Southern lady because I have never smoked on the street. No matter which sex I had just been to bed with."

But it would never happen down here, the town I lived in last put it on all of their signs in front of municipal buildings and in big letters on a huge lighted one coming into the city.

Privileged super-majority claims they are persecuted by a minority who REALLY has the power, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Thanks to many Pennsylvania FFRF'ers who contacted the Council before the vote. Now it's time to thank the Council for keeping religion out of government and for ensuring Allegheny County is a welcoming place for all citizens, including nonbelievers.
