Louisiana church posts video of standing ovation for priest after child sex accusations.

A Louisiana priest received a standing ovation from his church over the weekend following new details about sexual abuse of a 9-year-old boy in the 1970s.

A report released by Minnesota Public Radio last month included a never-before-published affidavit, which had been sealed by a federal judge in 1995. The document indicated that Father Gilbert Dutel “had been accused of coercing young adult men into having sex.”

“Well, he would just put his arms around me and he was I guess trying to be consoling, kind of gentle and then he just started playing with me and he unzipped my pants,” the victim recalled, according to the affidavit. “He performed oral sex on me.”

The victim said that he had around eight sexual encounters with Dutel in total. Two other priests were also mentioned in the affidavit, but this was the first time that Dutel’s name had been made public. According to Minnesota Public Radio, Bishop Harry Flynn later told lawyers that Dutel had been “cured,” and that the diocese needed to keep him due to a shortage of priests.

Sort of makes the repeated claims that it's just a few priests and mainstream Catholics are just as disgusted by it as everyone else ring hollow, doesn't it?

In fact, that's why these cases are often so old and caused to much harm to the victims - any attempt they may have made at the time to call attention to the crime was denied by loyal church members, who were taught their whole lives that priests live according to god's law, far above the laws of humans.

A standing ovation for what - almost getting away with it?

I'd say it was beyond belief but, sadly, it's not.

The rotten garbage I've had to read on a progressive message board in defense of the RCC on this issue is bad enough.

There is nothing to indicate that this guy was driven by any kind of religious belief. He is a despicable pedophile who took advantage of a very good agency to prey on helpless and vulnerable children.

This story has nothing to do with religion other than the fact that the agency he worked with is religiously motivated.

Or some other such bullshit.

I should know, Heddi's father was a priest, and he was a swell fella. The bees knees. The whole bag of chips.

And gee, it's wrong to blame the church for covering it up. They only lied about it a little, and all the good things they do outweigh one unfortunate priest accidentally touching a child sexually. HOW could they have known?

There's no proof he was a priest. He was a pedophile that found a way to get in where he had unlimited access to victims. To suggest that religion had anything to do with this is beyond the pale. I should know. My father was a priest.

this is to attack religion. If everyone stopped talking about the RCC's pedophilia problem, there wouldn't be a problem! So the haters are causing the problem by talking about it. Too bad we can't have an atheist group of non haters who don't cause pedophilia problems.

A safe haven that provides opportunities for people of all faiths, spiritual leanings and non-belief to discuss religious topics and events in a positive and civil manner, with an emphasis on tolerance. Where criticisms of individual beliefs or non-belief, or debates about the existence of higher power would not be tolerated. Where we can slap the ban hammer on anyone who looks at us funny. Where we can have 60% of posts with between 0-10 replies. Where we can have a human-robot post 18 OP's a day...

Who can't be around the rest of us without acting like a dick, and who need a place where they can go to tell each other how much better they are than all of the bigoted anti-theists in that other room that should have to change its name.
