Indonesia shuts down red light district ahead of Ramadan
Updated Sat 28 Jun 2014, 9:20am AEST
Hundreds of police and soldiers have raided a huge red light district in Indonesia's second-biggest city, closing down brothels before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Scuffles broke out briefly on Friday between security forces and people protesting the raid.
It took place in the area known as Dolly, in Surabaya on Indonesia's main Java island, where women advertise their services by sitting in brightly lit shop windows...
The bid to close the area has sparked fierce resistance from sex workers and others whose jobs depend on the red-light district.
They have staged regular protests.
The government has pledged to give them financial assistance and training in new professions...
Islamic hardliners regularly carry out raids on bars and brothels during Ramadan.

I saw a couple of things like this when I lived in Egypt:
1. In hotel bars, shisha shops, coffee shops etc., TVs were often tuned to The Fashion Channel. Not because Egypt had a lot of fashionistas, but because that channel usually featured runway models wearing 2 pieces of dental floss. During Ramadan, Egyptian TV providers blacked out the channel completely. When I went to my guide screen, it said: "Fashion Channel - removed for Holy Month of Ramadan."
2. For 2 years in Egypt, I lived in an American-owned hotel. The first year the hotel was managed by a German. Then an Egyptian took over. He closed the hotel bar for the whole month of Ramadan! Well, he closed ONE hotel bar - the one closest to the main dining room. Upstairs was another bar, not as visible/accessible. It stayed open during Ramadan.

This is the sort of thing that scares the hell out of me about the fundies in this country trying to impose their beliefs on the whole population. I could see that going so far as to be just as bad as the religious states of Islam.
