Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumHey this argument was made in the (R) forum a while ago: All Racists are Atheists

Dan Caplis, of KNUS-AM, made the comments Monday morning during a discussion of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who made bigoted comments against black people during a recorded phone call.
The roots of this kind of racism, this kind of attitude where somebody really thinks theyre superior to somebody, just because of the color of the other persons skin? First, what it tells me you know, my constitutionally-protected opinion about that person is they dont believe in God, Caplis said.
Nobody who believes in God can be a racist, in my view, because once you believe God made us, you mean, God made junk? Caplis continued. God made somebody lesser just by virtue of the color of their skin? So my starting point is always: All racists must be atheists. They cant possibly believe in God.
snip
I apologize if it was taken that way, but never couldve imagined somebody would think I was saying that all atheists are racists, he said. That would be a goofy thing to say. I was just saying all racists are atheists.

Someone should nominate him to be a host next time an opening appears in the Religion Forum

See? Isn't that fabulous? You are not a racist if you think there are biological reasons for your racism. See Hitler for example.

You know, Dawkins, Hitchens, et. al, get raked over the coals every time they compose a sentence that doesn't explicitly state "SOME believers do SOME things SOME times but not EVERYONE ALL THE TIME"
But a religionist can say whatever the fuck they want, with as broad of a brush as they want, using as incorrect historical and political evidence as they want, and hey! Deeply held beliefs! Who are you to judge?
But make ONE comment about religion without a healthy peppering of "some" "not all" "not every" and WHY YOU BIGOTING, HATER?

(13,485 posts)E.G. Hitler wasn't a Christian for biological, social, or cultural reasons...he was a Christian by choice or in his words, "a Catholic for life" according to Mein Kampf. So I guess he was a racist, a homophobe and a Christian de facto? Must give us pause....
Where does atheism fit in??? That connection alludes me.

Black atheists must be the worst. Like uncle ruckus.

(18,312 posts)get back to hating on gays and blacks, with the implication that atheists were primarily bigots and homophobes until we started hating on religion.
And it was allowed to stand.
I guess since I'm bisexual, I can hate on the straights AND the gays. So at least I've got that going for me.

(34,648 posts)Who can i hate on?? I'm black, so does that mean i have to go around beating myself with a cat o nine tails?? Don't feel like hating on gays. My cousin and his husband might beat me up. Pretty big dudes. Or laugh at me. He's a comedian, that one.
I can't say anything about things that affect me, as i have been told that my personality has flaws.
I have noticed here that minority groups are labeled as discontent idealists. Thats what he called me. Maybe we are all just discontent idealists. All those ideas. Like fairness.

(20,018 posts)"The explanation that black Africans, as the "sons of Ham", were cursed, possibly "blackened" by their sins, was advanced only sporadically during the Middle Ages, but it became increasingly common during the slave trade of the 18th and 19th centuries.[56][57] The justification of slavery itself through the sins of Ham was well suited to the ideological interests of the elite; with the emergence of the slave trade, its racialized version justified the exploitation of African labour."

(49,533 posts)The notion that true believers can't do bad things, they couldn't have done it out of sincere religious belief - they must clearly be atheists who are just using religion to try and get away with their crimes.
Or so a CURRENT host of that group tries to keep telling everyone.

strawstrawstrawstrawmen everywhere. The straw man logical fallacy is the most common and simple of all. Add some ad hominem, tu quoque and sprinkle on a little bulverism... now we have the usual arguments on a half-shell.
Ooops, I forgot the argument from Inertia and the non sequitur... can't forget those. We almost have wallpaper.

(654 posts)Mr. Caplis certainly proves the point that you don't have to have very much intellectual capacity to get a radio gig these days....perhaps he could explain all those good christians opposed to integration during the 60s, or the good bible believing slave owners. Or those wonderfully tolerant folks of the KKK...
Another idiot using his first amendment rights to proclaim his stupidity for all the world to see and review.
I always enjoy opinion not based in any facts at all, it's exactly what most christians use to explain their faith. They have the opinion that a magical sky man will constantly review their daily activities and offer the occasional ability to win a sporting event thanks to some random prayers to said magical sky man. That opinion has no basis in fact, and no basis in any reality whatsoever...so I tend to take their other opinions, especially from the likes of Mr. Caplis with a bit of skepticism as they've already proven a willingness to avoid factual support for their opinions or beliefs.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)avoid factual support for their opinions and beliefs. If they had facts, they would have no faith because facts nullify faith. Faith relies on irrational thought and produces intransigence. So, if their faith is provable it disappears.
It's their circular logic not mine.

(9,356 posts)It seems to work this way, at least in That Other Group:
1. If an atheist wants to say "The Pope (or Billy Graham) is dumber than a stump," then they must provide rock-solid evidence of that statement. Preferably by conducting a survey of all deciduous and coniferous stumps and averaging their respective IQs.
2. But if a believer wants to say all atheists are racists and homophobes, they can just arrive at that conclusion by using ESP. No evidence required!
