(25,348 posts)...parts of the Bible are written by God, they'll answer "All of it"....until you quote some of the "Crazy ass shit"
and then they make more excuses than a 5 year-old that's been caught with his hand in the candy jar.
Only part of the Bible I follow is the stoning part.

Stoning for adultery........

(1,689 posts)They'll stone you when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone you just like they said they would
They'll stone you when you're trying to go home
They'll stone you when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
Everybody must get stoned

(9,288 posts)They are trying to get out of it because you gave the book, chapter and verse rather than straight out C&P it for them.
Jesus will reward men who abandon their wives and families. 10:29-30
For example.
Versus:
29 Truly I tell you, Jesus replied, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fieldsalong with persecutionsand in the age to come eternal life.
But if you did that they would then complain about context. So then you would have to show the whole chapter. Then they would use the "only a believer can truly understand the bible in context" argument. Then you mention "believers" who interpreted in the same way as you. Then it becomes the "Only a TRUE believer" line of bull.
>_>

(18,219 posts)they are never going to listen to you.
The only real reason to even talk to them about the Bible is to get through to the other people who are reading it, but are not posting. I assume that is your intent, since most people do not get into the fray, but do read the posts.
And when people read it, if they are open minded, they can see the truth.

(21,046 posts)It's so easy to piss off a Christian that it's not any fun.
No challenge at all.
And I get told that I'm being negative when I point out the hypocrisy they are showing. If it's so easy for me to poke holes in their beliefs, then they need to get a better system of morality.

(18,219 posts)And the comments about your negativity. I think that their arguments are weak and laughable, but I will say that I can see what they are doing. Your comments are not negative, but they are argumentative. And as you have been told, you are paraphrasing instead of using the exact wording (although I don't know which Bible you should use to "quote" . But that is no excuse for no one correcting you and telling you the right interpretations. Oh well. If you can't beat them, uh, never mind!

(13,485 posts)it's not the posters that are the audience... it's the lurkers!

(18,219 posts)If the intent is just to screw with Christians, I am opposed to that.

(13,485 posts)or anyone else for that matter. I do think information is important and having an opinion that stands the tests of reason are important to me. When these religious arguments get blunt, I see just as much shit in the fan from one side as another most of the time. I confess I have taken part in it on occasion but hopefully I can separate the "blunt" from the balance. But concerning the conversations that take place here on DU around religious themes I have very much come to the conclusion that neither side has any intent of learning from the other or relenting from their position either in small ways or large. In which case someone is likely to to begin a conquest of Internet skill and another is likely to be offended or both. 'Seems kind of futile... or is it? Because really, the audience for either side are those never seen or heard in those conversations... the lurkers. So, I think throwing your best punch is pretty good idea in that case. I never expect to win any Internet contest, but just make a point and let the readers think for themselves. I don't care who has the last word.
