(111,267 posts)and the way religion has been co opted by the far right lunatics who think they own god along with everything else. The people who put "none" are still very likely to be believers, they just prefer to sleep in on Sunday rather than go to a church and get their intelligence insulted by some pompadoured fraud.

(28,017 posts)As late as 20 years ago, stating that you had no faith or religious belief was the surest way to being singled out, ostracized, and harassed. Even by others who shared your nonbelief. The tubes allowed a couple of things to flourish.
a. anonymity
b. safety in numbers
c. exchange of ideas, proving the hypocrisy of faith in general
d. Their many failed teachings could be examined under the light of day
e. the formerly hidden child abuse scandals have since become very, very public.
None of those, or not all of these would have been in place without the Tubes.

(10,237 posts)I've heard a few mega churches in L.A. have closed then I hear that Amy Semple Mcfearson's church that closed in the 30s is open and full of sheep.

(2,485 posts)Seems like these studies generally finish with the statement that it doesn't mean those people don't believe, they just stop getting together with other people who do.
