Hauyat is a 6,000-year-old Heiltsuk village on the central coast of B.C. It's the focus of a new interactive website, hauyat.ca, with Heiltsuk language, teachings and stories. PNG

The Heiltsuk have launched an interactive website that tells the story of their language and a 6,000-year village called Hauyat.

A new interactive Heiltsuk website is making thousands of years of Aboriginal history available to anyone with the click of a mouse. The website focuses on the village of Hauyat — pronounced hoy-ett — located on a beautiful bay on the Central Coast of B.C.

Anyone can take a virtual tour of the ancient site at hauyat.ca. The village is about 10 minutes by boat from Bella Bella, the home of the Heiltsuk.

The easily navigable website is full of recordings of elders and stories, teachings and cultural fundamentals, along with an in-depth timeline that dates Heiltsuk settlement of Triquet Island to about 14,000 years ago.

The site is also a contemporary vehicle for the Heiltsuk to teach their language and traditions to their children and future generations.

This part of the nw coast is difficult to get to but well worth the effort. I been hiking on the north end of Vancouver island and other parts of BC. Visit if you have the chance.

Skiings not to bad either.
