7 Ancient and Forgotten Civilizations

7.ZAPOTEC CIVILIZATION

While most people are familiar with the Maya of Mesoamerica and the Aztecs, the people called the Zapotec remain comparatively vague. Among the first individuals in the region to use writing and agricultural systems, additionally they assembled among the earliest recognized cities in North America–Monte Alban. Founded in the fifth century B.C., the city was residence to a maximum of 25,000 citizens and lasted for over 1,200 years. In Monte Alban, a privileged class composed of priests, warriors, and artists ruled over the lower classes.

Like many of the cultures of Mesoamerica, the surrounding regions were subjugated by the Zapotecs through a combination of diplomacy, warfare, and tribute. The sudden downfall of their culture seemed to don’t have any motive, and their greatest city was generally left whole, though it was eventually destroyed by years of abandonment. Some scholars consider that a failure of the economic system may have shoved the Zapotecs to find work elsewhere. The remaining portion of the citizenry grouped together into various city states, which carry on to fight each other (also as outside forces) until they were no more.

Furthermore, they were arty and fond of children; archaeologists have uncovered various toys, including animals and rattles, buried among the other artifacts. They were also exceptionally arranged– the deceased were all entombed in a central location, and the houses of the Vinca culture had particular places for trash.
