The PC on a memory stick that doesn't leave a trace of your browsing history or documents

If you are either super important, super paranoid, or a super spy, there are times when you need to be able to use a computer - and not leave a trace.

Now, a clever piece of software lets you carry your own personal PC which you can carry inside your pocket - and once you have finished using it, no-one will ever know.

Technically, what you are carrying is not a whole computer - instead it is a simple USB memory stick.

But within it is a full operating system (like Windows), and when you plug it into a PC, that computer will restart into your own personal set-up, called Tails.

Question- Wouldn't all the browsing or whatever still be traceable to the host computer? n2doc Jun 2012 #8

It's Linux. The difference is that Linux is stable, reliable, and secure and Windows is none of those things.

I've used several versions of these single disk Linux systems. There are several like Knoppix that boot off a CD or DVD or thumb. This one, Tails, leaves no traces on the host computer. I am sure that this would be easy to do with a thumb drive.

This sounds like the perfect device for anyone to watch anything they want online and not get caught, no matter how depraved or illegal it is. And that sucks, because this is really cool for all sorts of non-sick reasons, but it could so easily be exploited for really bad purposes.

For example, if you used this for something nefarious, your network, the ISP's network, and the FBI wiretap would all record what you had done.

Thus, to be truly untraceable, one would need to use a computer that has no connection to you?
